"Mooing" at night- common, or is it just me?

Hello there,
I suspect this is a slightly odd enquiry but I am keen to know whether anyone else makes strange noises at night during pregnancy. I am reliably told by my DH that I regularly imitate a cow while asleep! It has got so bad that he has taken to the spare bed, and last night I actually heard myself doing it as I dropped off (it was pretty weird).

He complained of this in my last pregnancy, but only from about 30 wks onward, whereas I'm now only 13 weeks. Has anyone heard of this? I'm guessing it might be a result of increased nasal congestion or something?

Thanks in advance, p

I've woken myself up a couple of times when I've made strange 'throaty' noises. I don't know if I would describe them as 'mooing' but they're definitely not snorts. I've put it down to the extra weight and pressure on my lungs etc - like breathlessness during the day but because you're asleep and not controlling it as much as you would be when awake, it comes out more as throaty, deep gasps.

Do you sleep with your head raised, Pendulum? I've found that I'm more likely to make this noise if I have my head raised higher than usual. Don't know if this helps but fear not, you're not alone!

Lord, I know I look like a cow (well as large as one at any rate), but to my knowledge I have never impersonated one.

This is a first for me.

Twiga · 13/03/2007 11:07

No mooing here but talking in sleep a lot more than usual. Woke us both up couple of mornings ago reeling off "Two little dickie birds" complete with actions.

Creena, you have described it exactly. "gasp" sounds much better than "moo" I think (but hey, I am used to my charming husband.... today, to celebrate my 12 week scan, he bought me a Pot Noodle with a bow on it as knows I have a weird craving that I won't give in to)

Will try removing one of my pillows tonight and see if that helps. Thanks for making me fell less of a freak!

i'm pretty confident i'm not mooing at night but you've given me my best laugh of the day! i've got tears in my eyes!
on a serious note I do think pregnancy has a weird effect on the subconscious - i've been getting awful nightmares. in one I dreamt i gave birth to a king prawn, which has got to compete with your mooing problem any day!

pendulum · 14/03/2007 06:36

mmmm.... king prawn....

after reading your messages, izzzie and Twiga, things seem in proportion once again. I'm going to ask DH if he would prefer me to sing!

Izzie, don't start on the funny dreams. I dreamt the other night I was on a plane, there was loads of turbulence and I was terrified. Even more so when I looked around and all the flight crew and cabin crew were toddlers! just like in the toilet paper advert where the little toddler is wearing grown up clothes and talking in a baby voice. Totally freaked me out!

ilovemyoboe · 27/01/2009 21:47

I'm 28 weeks, and I've had all sorts of weird dreams. The funniest was I was at my Mum's house and the lounge was full of cats (to put this in context, my sister still lives at home and has 3 cats and about 6 rabbits). I was trying to throw the cats out (not a cat person) but then found there were rabbits in there too which looked a bit like cats as they were cat-coloured e.g. tabby rabbits, marmalade rabbits etc. Was having a hard time throwing out the cats without throwing out the rabbits.

My husband says that in the last week or so, I've started making little 'crying out' noises. He was wondering if I was in pain turning over or something, but it doesn't wake me up, so can't be. Have never talked in my sleep before, as far as I'm aware.

Feeltrapped · 28/01/2009 09:05

pendulum - it's not just you. Wouldn't have thought to describe it as a 'moo' but pretty sure I know just what you mean. DP thinks its hilarious

nickschick · 28/01/2009 09:09

ladies this is all stuff you must never tell your consultants at the hospital........

errr was the snot poodle a bombay bad boy??

nissa · 28/01/2009 09:17

Pendulum - I'm 28 weeks and have heard myself make these kind of throaty noises too. I thought I was odd but glad I'm not the only one!

Also the dreams are freaking me out - I dreamt the whole inside part of my cats paw was missing - it was just a shell of a paw with his fur over the top and he was trying to fill up the space with tiny stones????

and now I want a pot noodle for breakfast.....
