15 weeks still need folic acid tablets?

Im 15 weeks and stoped taking folic acid tablets at 12 only to then be told by the hospital midwife that I should continue them throughout the pregnancy. Also was directed to a community pharmacy for "healthy start vitamins for pregnant women" which infact has now closed so I don't know where to source these?
Any thoughts or comments what I should be taking if anything?

Ring midwife and check.

Yeah they like you to take pregnacare the whole way through or failing that, folic acid and vitamin D.

arbrighton · 28/04/2017 10:56

no, the only thing that is recommended throughout pregnancy is Vit D

Pregnacare is very expensive and has been shown to be unnecessary

My midwives and the health professionals at the hospital all said to keep taking folic acid and vit D throughout. I buy mine for £1 each in the supermarket, no need for the really expensive pregnancy vitamins!

dede124 · 28/04/2017 20:12

I stopped taking folic acid at 12 weeks and haven't taken any vitamin D at all and I'm 16 weeks. Should I still be taking folic acid and vitamin D?? I just assumed they would tell you whether you need vitamin D from blood results? Hmm

Littleraincloud · 28/04/2017 20:15

I used pregnacare but I did find it had other benefits such as strengthening my nails and my hair was really glossy too. I dont know how it would compare to cheaper but I liked it

Oysterbabe · 28/04/2017 20:18

Yes you can stop folic acid at 12 weeks and just continue with vit D. There's some evidence to suggest that continuing with folic acid past 12 weeks increases the risk of tongue tie.

mummabubs · 28/04/2017 21:19

Never! I'll stop taking my folic acid then after I've googled this, but my midwife and sonographer both said to keep taking it?! Odd. (I'm not low or deficient in folic acid so no medical need to continue).

mummabubs · 28/04/2017 21:21

NHs website says it's safe to continue to take folic acid after 12 weeks of pregnancy. Can't see any article re: tongue tie but will keep looking!

Mummyh2016 · 28/04/2017 21:39

I'm 32 weeks, stopped taking pregnacare back in December at 12 weeks as they were making me sick. I was told off at my midwife app this week as my iron is low, she was not amused when I said I hadn't taken them for 20 weeks Blush

Unhappyhousehunting · 28/04/2017 21:50

The neural tube is closed by now so no need to carry on :)

I do birth defect research and hadn't heard the thing about tongue tie...will have a look

GreenGoblin0 · 28/04/2017 21:54

@dede124 yes it's recommended that pregnant women take vitamin d supplements for duration of pregnancy

CreamCheez · 29/04/2017 14:12

I was taking Pregnacare before my pregnancy (I think it helped me to conceive) & my doctor said to continue on with it throughout. Luckily I've not been sick (also think Pregnacare is helping!) so I'm eating really well. I'd say there's no harm continuing whatever vits you're taking if they are pregnancy-friendly.

MSH2010 · 29/04/2017 15:34

I've been told to carry on but the folic acid tablets alone were causing me a sore throat so I've swooped to a pregnancy vitamin similar to pregnacare but slightly cheaper

helenfagain · 29/04/2017 15:42

Seven seas pregnancy cuts are way cheaper than pregnacare and didn't make me feel sick like pregnacare did.
