Flying at 19 weeks

I'm flying to New York in a couple of weeks, by which time I'll be 19 weeks pg. Feel OK apart from usual niggles. This is my first pregnancy so I don't know whether I should go to my GP just to check that it's OK to fly. Not sure what she'd check (blood pressure?). I'm inclined to think I don't need to but just wondered if anyone had any views? Thanks

I flew to Majorca at 29 weeks. I just needed a letter from my gp and I had to tell the insurance company.

New York is obviously a longer flight but I think you'd only need to tell the insurance people. Don't think you'd need a letter till later on in preg.

Remember to drink lots of water and get up and walk up and down the aisle at least once an hour. You'll be doing that anyway to go to the loo cos of all the water. Wear those flight socks too.

You should be fine. I went to Durban at 26 weeks (11 & 1/2 hr flight) and even managed a spot of surfing while I was pg with first baby. Have a nice time.

TheBlonde · 12/03/2007 10:42

I wouldn't bother going to the GP if you are feeling fine
It is worth taking your notes with you in your hand luggage just in case

I agree there is no issue. I am flying on Saturday, at 23 weeks. Flying with BA, whose policy is to allow pg women up until 36 weeks, but they ask for a GP's letter from 28 weeks. SO really dont think an issue for you. Have fun!!!

Thanks- didn't think I needed to but wanted to check. Also want to fly at just over 32 weeks with BA which is a whole other issue insurance wise...

Don't have any notes yet, guess MW still has them -but will put a note in my bag with a few details just in case I pass out or something and am on my own. (My friends will be in economy- I've treated myself to premium economy!)

My Ob said after 14 weeks is a good time, cant remember up till how many weeks though I think 30 or 34.

I think flying in preganancy means it is even more importnant to drink water and move about.
Have a great time

Told my midwife on Sat that am flying to Las Vegas (11 hours) just days inside my 28 week window (time after which you need a fit to travel letter from doctor). She was concerned, but only about me and my health. she said I'd be shattered so have promised to take it easy once there and have another couple of days off when I get back to make sure it doesn't take too much out of me. Just make sure you do the regular walking around stuff, ankle rotation exercises when sitting, wear the surgical stocking things and drink loads of water.
Also, perhaps put on your most disarming smile and best clothes to travel in, you just never know if perhaps there were to be a little gap in upper/business class....

Have already thought about the upgrade possibilities! Has never happened yet so don't hold out much hope.
Are you flying Virgin to Vegas. I'm flying with them to NY and spoke to their 'special assistance' line as it said on their website to call them. They were very nice and told me all about the drinking, socks etc etc (and checked I wasn't having twins!)and also put a note on my booking for possible bulkhead seat with extra legroom etc(not allowed to sit in the exit seats. Prob worth doing if you're with them.

You could just plonk yourself for hours on end in front of a fruit machine and be like all the old ladies in the casinos- pity you can't take advantage of all the free drinks-Am v jealous as i LOVE Vegas but I suppose New York isn't too bad...

Hahahahah will be so fat I probably won't even be able to sit on those little seats to play the one arm bandits all day....
Have actually booked Premium Economy anyway, and like you called the special assistance line. I just said I'd like to be put on an aisle seat so as not to disturb the poor person next to me when I go to the toilet for the gazillionth time. Am still going to ask if there's anyway that the lovely, beautiful people working on my flight might upgrade little 'ole me.
As for New York, at least you're not going to be massive when you're there so will be able to enjoy walking around and shopping etc I should think

EdieMcredie · 12/03/2007 16:46

Im flying to Barbados at 20 weeks...

medulsa · 17/03/2007 16:42

by the time of birth this little one would have done about 14 return flights between 4-12 hours in duration. Have to travel because my work takes me all over the place (I live in the US now btw). Doctor not delighted and said 10 return flights is recommended maximum due to potential exposure to environmental radiation. But have searched online and there's precious little I can find about this being a confirmed and deeply researched concern. Maybe it's a bit like microwaves?? Common sense says there should be a problem but science can't back it up. Anyway, have to keep on the move as I'm sole income earner in our household and about to lose all this income for 6-9 months whilst I have baby. DH is scientist finding it hard to get grants.
