Hi everyone, I am 28 weeks pregnant and the past few nights i keep being woken up by burning acid reflux (lovely!). Does anyone know what I can do/change/avoid to stop this?
Thanks!

-prop yourslef up on pillows (or put bricks under the head side of your bed to prop it up)
-sleep on your left side
get a big honking bottle of maalox!!!

May not work for everyone but I find eating some vanilla ice cream during the evening (though not too late) helps it to calm down.

Gaviscon - get on prescription from doctors (i went through gallons of the stuff!)
peppermint tea
sip cool boiled water and as purple monkey says prop yourself up - also try not to go to bed straight after eating ...

Are you taking anything before going to bad IE tablets? As I got this last PG when I had to take iron tablets twice a day and doctor said to me to take my night time tablet at least 4 hours before going to bed and not to lie daown stright after eating!

Avoid fatty foods in the evening, also crusty bread. Don't eat within a few hours of going to bed but drink some milk. Gaviscon before you need it and then as you need it. And then if it is really bad Zantac is safe to take in pregnancy - you buy this over the counter. If that's still not strong enough your doctor can prescribe ranitidine. Hope that helps! As soon as I realised I didn't have to live with the awful heartburn like I had been led to believe it was an immense relief and one less thing keeping me awake at night during the third trimester!

aqua - I drank bottles of the stuff - you can get it free on prescription so don't buy it over the counter.

cupcakesgalore · 09/03/2007 13:57

If it persists see your GP. I was drinking vats of gaviscon but it wasn't enough. My GP prescribed ranitidine. It's a prescription strength version of Zantac I think. Was pretty good.

Stay away from anything pastry like and eat and drink lots and lots of yogurt.

I had it terribly with both of mine to the extent that I spoke like a man for most of my pregnancy where it had burnt my vocal chords!! A nice indian doctor found me in my very late stages of pregnancy vomiting acid over the toilet whilst peeing (dribbles from heaving due to pfm being shot!!) onto a huge pile of towels on the floor - he laughed - I didn't think it funny and was fuming with DH for letting him come upstairs and said that I had to stay away from milk as it has an acid PH and to drink and eat as much yogurt as I could stomach - preferably plain yogurt - and it worked - I get it now every so often and just have a carton of yogurt and am fine - which is a relief after years fo taking Opramazole!!

So milk wont help? I get this at night too. The bed is propped up, I sleep on my left side, take Peptac as pescribed by the doctor before going to bed and I still get it. Try to drink milk before bed as I thought it would help maybe thats where I am going wrong. I will try yogurt and see if that helps.
