Anyone know where I go and what week is best to have one done?

My mum is all worried that she'll still e in spain at my (step) brothers wedding so I want to take her to see a 4d image of her granddaughter or grandson so she dosn't feel so bad if she's still way when I give birth.

I'm in London and 11/12 weeks.

The Birth Company does 3d/4d scans in London. It's located on Harley Street. They recommend doing these sort of scans between 26-32 weeks because before then the baby looks more alien than "baby" and later than that it's too squished to get a clear view. Generally they look after women throughout their entire pregnancy but I don't see why they wouldn't see you just for a scan so it's definitely worth calling them. They've got a detailed website that you can get more info from which is www.thebirthcompany.co.uk

Google Professor Campbell-he developed them and is wonderful-best in the industry-just had too much wine to remember his details.

I had one done at 33 weeks - in Midlands though. I got photos and a cd which was lovely! There's a big variation in prices I found but think the service is essentially the same.

The Portland also offer the scans for non-patients. I've had them done for both my pregnancies at 28wks which is actually the upper time limit for them - I think they recommend 24 - 28wks.

I've been very pleased with the results for both of mine, although you do have to hope for a bit of luck - in my second pregnancy the placenta was laying across the front so the pics are a bit murky.

If you check out the back pages of baby mags there are usually quite a few ads for places offering 4d scans.

I would also recommend Prof Campbell at Create Health Clinic in London. Not only do you get a really good image (i went at just under 14 weeks), he does incredibly detailed health checks. In fact, his checks at 14 weeks were far more meticulous than what I just had at 21 weeks on the NHS, and you get a really full printed out report afterwards. You also get a DVD of your little alien though I have to say i haven't watched it! One word of warning - because the scan is so detailed you might be quite shocked by how weird your baby looks! (well, i'm hoping it wasn't just mine that looks like that!) But even at 12 weeks he can see the sex, if you want to know! You also get a figure giving you the likelihood of Downs. (nuchal fold test.)
it costs £150 and both me and my husband thought it was an absolute bargain for all the information we got.
good luck

what on earth is a 4d image?

GlitteringGoldie · 09/03/2007 11:36

It's pretty self explanatory Hathor, it's a scan in 3d or 4d as apposed to 2d - as in dimensions?

Hathor · 09/03/2007 11:53

Sorry to be dim, but what is 4d? It sounds like something out of Star Trek. If the 3 d scan can see all the outside of the baby in the uterus, does that mean 4d you see inside it too in 3d?

GlitteringGoldie · 09/03/2007 12:04

A 3d scan is a static volume image and a 4d scan is a 3d image with the element of time. In other words, a 4d scan allows sonographers and dr's to visualize the baby in movement. Basically 3d is just the "snapshot" of the baby and 4d is that "snapshot" in motion.

Hathor · 09/03/2007 12:36

oh, I see now. Ta for the explanation.

I went to Create Health as well but they actually recommend doing the 3d/4d scan at 28 weeks and it's £200. When I called at 24 weeks to make a booking the receptionist asked how far along I was and said that 28 weeks is the ideal time to do it. If you do it too early your baby doesn't have enough fat on it to get a really good look at how it will look at birth. We did it for fun to see what our daughter would look like and the other information we got was a bonus of sorts. I got about 20 photos and a DVD and could see the baby's face as if she were already born and with us!

I think the 14 week scan a previous poster had was the NT scan, just done in 3d/4d which is why the baby may have still looked a bit "weird". I had a growth scan done at my hospital at 32 weeks in 3d and could barely see anything as baby is too large already at this point so is all smushed up in there!
