Just wondering if there are any other Mum's out there who have had baby elephants and how their babies' weight compared.

I'm pregnant with No.3 and am predicting another big one! Hence name!!! Although I am 8 years older than I was the last time I did this, so maybe won't be so big.

#1 was a boy 10ib 10oz normal delivery
#2 was a boy 10ib 4oz induced normal delivery

Has anyone been told they're having a big baby. When I was in labour with my first the midwife thought I'd have a 7lb baby going by the size of my bump, still remember her face when he 'popped' out, it was a picture

PS anyone got any ideas about my listing re 'strange placenta'?

hopeitwon't - When are you due? Hopefully after me so I've got someone else to compare stats for!

I'm the end of August

Hopeitwontbebig · 09/03/2007 19:51

Littlefish · 09/03/2007 20:08

Blardy hell custardo that's impressive.

A friend has just had twins, 6.10 and 6.15. She's only about 5ft 1 herself. I don't know how she stayed upright!

MegaLegs · 09/03/2007 20:13

DS1 10lbs 10ozs
DS2 9lbs (my tiddler LOL)
DS3 10lbs 15ozs (OUCH!!!)
all normal deliveries with gas and air and only stitches with DS1 (bucket fanjo).
DS4 9lbs 3ozs CS as he was a transverse lie.

MegaLegs · 09/03/2007 20:18

I remember taking DS1 for a bath in the little nursery on the ward. I put him on the changing mat next to a baby girl who weighed just under 7 pounds. He dwarfed her. Non of the newborn clothes fit him, he was 62 cm long! I learnt my lesson and always took 0-3 months clothes in my hospital bag for the others.

Spidermama · 09/03/2007 20:29

8lbs
9lbs
9/8lbs
10lbs.

No drugs. No gas and air. No Tens. No contest. YES! In your face. Hahahaha.

Disclaimer: Spidermama would like to assure readers that the above post in no way implies that there is anything competitive about childbirth. Furthermore any perceived unpleasantness on her part has slipped out due to a gagging effect of RL mothers with the prevailing view that those with positive birth stories had better shut the fuck up about them.

spangly · 09/03/2007 20:34

Wow! There seem to be quite a few of us out there. My DD seems quite small by comparison.

DD was 10lb 3 1/2 (2 weeks late). Midwife predicted she would be under 8lb (and a boy). Consultant said he didn't think the baby was big 2 minutes before I was wheeled in for an emergency c-section. Still, big babies have their advantages. She slept and fed like a dream.

Due number 2 in September. Am having tests for gestational diabetes and size etc.. Anyone else had this? (sorry if that's a bit of a hijack - not intended). Personally wouldn't mind another biggy but won't be allowed to try for a natural birth if size is an issue.

tiredandgrumpy · 09/03/2007 21:07

Another hijack (sorry). dd was 9lb 7, which shocked me, but isn't exactly huge. Hospital insisted on testing 3-hourly blood sugar levels and forcing me to give her formula top-ups until my milk came in. Scared me with talk of higher jaundice risk etc. Fact is, their policy had changed and a few months earlier they wouldn't even have tested such a 'little' baby in this way. Wouldn't let me out of hospital until blood sugar level was an acceptable level (was only ever marginally low). As soon as I got home, stopped formula, have bf ever since and never a problem.

Anyone else had this experience? Made me so cross and will be having next one in a different hospital.

Hopeitwontbebig · 10/03/2007 12:14

Spangly, yes I was tested for gestational diabetes when pregnant with DS2, it was negative. Not the most fun day out in my life has to be said.

Would be interesting to hear what height you ladies are and DH's

I'm 5' 7" and DH is 6' 3"

I blame it aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall on him!!!

But I do like big babies, 'normal' 7 lb babes look so fragile to me!!

spangly · 10/03/2007 19:18

Hopeitwontbebig - thanks for info re: gestational diabetes. It does seem that big babies are just more common now so fingers crossed I'll be negative too. I've been told to cut down on carbs but can't bear the thought of cutting out all naughty treats

DH and I are both 5'7" so no-one to blame there

Tiredandgrumpy - my dd's sugar levels weren't checked and I was actively discouraged from giving formula (even though I was bf'ing) even though she was jaundiced. Must just be different hospitals. Hope you have a better experience next time.

london11 · 10/03/2007 20:13

My 11lb 12oz DS spent time in special care when born due to low blood sugars, he looked ridiculous in there next to all the tiny babies! And I agree, hopeitwontbebig, I loved my big solid baby - tiny 4lb neice was so scary!

staceym11 · 10/03/2007 21:10

i take my hat off to you ladies, my two were 6lb 14 dd and 2yrs later ds 7lb exact, and i thought that was hard!! as you see ds was a little bit bigger but not an awful lot, and they were both 9 days early coincidently!

octopussyintummy · 10/03/2007 21:36

ds1 8.4lb
ds2 10.0lb
ds3 - due next month - am concerned he is going to be huge but consultant didn't bat an eyelid - said seemed normal and if could push a ten punder out not to worry about it But I am worried of course as ds2 head was off the top of the chart and he was 62cm long They all gasped when they pulled him out - ventouse was the only way!

7 lbs would be nice ..... pray for me!

loler · 13/03/2007 12:24

Hopeitwontbebig - Will give you lots of scary stories at the end of August (Ha Ha back - )

I'm 5' 6, DH claims he is 5'9 1/2 (the 1/2 being very important to him!)

My dd had her blood sugars monitored and had to be normal before I was allowed home, with ds I only stayed in hospital for the minimum time so they didn't have a chance to monitor them!

I'm booked in to have glucose tol test too. Don't think they'll find any thing as I think my family just has big babies - my mums were 8lb 13, 10lb , 7 lb (twins) and 9lb. So do big babies have big babies?

toytownmum · 13/03/2007 21:10

DS1 2lb 11oz

14 months later...

DS2 9lb 15 1/2 oz

Hopeitwontbebig · 14/03/2007 09:31

Goodness toytown, you went from one extreme to the other!! I'm assuming your DS1 was prem? Must have been such a 'pleasant' shock to you to have had such a big baby 2nd time. I'm sure you went through the mill with your first.

mouseman · 14/03/2007 09:49

dd 10lb 13oz
ds 12lb 4oz
and both delivered a little early!!

Hopeitwontbebig · 14/03/2007 10:14

Imagine if you'd gone overdue mouseman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm truly worried now! Maybe I'll take up smoking and drinking, that lowers birth weight

OP posts:
3xamum · 14/03/2007 10:20

Ds1 - 7lb 6oz estimate 7.5 pounds (not bad)
dd1 - 9lb 7oz estimate 8lb (mmmm)
ds2 - 8lb 5oz estimate of over 10lb (so he looked tiny)

3xamum · 14/03/2007 10:21

Mouseman I bow in your presence! 12lb 4oz - wow!!

megandsoph · 14/03/2007 10:22

dd1 8.5lbs
dd2 5.9lbs

saltire · 14/03/2007 10:22

I'm just under 6ft and DH is 6ft 1".

DS1 - I was told by consultant that he would be about 6lb! He was 8lb 9, and was 60cm long when he was born

DS2 was 8lb 11 and was 2 weeks overdue. He was a pretty average length as well.
