does anyone have any experience or advice? my smear fell due during my first pregnancy. i had the smear as soon as possible after my baby was born (october, 4 months after delivery), but this came back showing borderline changes. a second smear was recommended, which i had in january. the results have come through the post today, saying the test was inadequate and a further one is recommended. however i'm now pregnant again. as i understand it i can't have another smear for what looks like over a year. the doctors surgery are being very casual about it, but for me it's a real worry. does anyone know if it is possible to have a smear during pregnancy. if it weren't for the results of the first test i wouldn't be worried, but find myself sitting here panicking a bit.....

I had a smear with borderline changes and was advised to have a 2nd one. However by that time I was pregant and they told me to wait until after the birth as the could not get conclusive results while you were pregnant.

I had my 2nd smear at the 6 week check up and it was ok BTW.

just found this on another website.

" But if you've had an abnormal smear just before you got pregnant, then your doctor will want to do another one during the pregnancy.

If your smear shows abnormal cells you will not have any treatment. Mildly abnormal cells can return to normal on their own after you have had your baby. "

I came on just now to post a question about smears in pregnancy and found this.

Although instinctively it feels wrong I wonder if it is OK to have a smear in pregnancy...

There are two reasons for this. I was reading in a midwifery journal about cervical cancer in pregnancy and the case study used described a woman getting an abnormal result (and undergoing treatment) when she was 16 weeks pregnant, which made me think that maybe it was alright to have smears when pregnant.
Another thing that makes me think it might be OK is that when I went to the EPU for an early scan due to spotting at 6 weeks they asked about my last smear and suggested I have another one done as it had been over 3 years and it might be the cause of my spotting. I questioned whether it was OK to do it when pregnant and she said yes.

I would suggest you talking to a midwife to get another more informed opinion. Do you have your booking appointment soon? Or is it them at your surgery that don't seem to worried?

hi, frustratingly i only saw my doctor to make the pregnancy official yesterday and the smear letter arrived today. this obviously means that my booking appointment probaly hasn't even entered the system yet. i have made appointment to see her again (it was the doctor on call today who seemed unconcerned), but (as is the way with these things) i have to wait 2 weeks to see her. i will probably go nuts in that time, but will at least go armed with some basic knowledge on whether a smear during preg is an option.....

I didn't realise that the reason they didn't do smears during pregnancy in the UK was due to inacurate results. I always thought it was due to messing with the cervix, bleeding, infection etc.......... I am in France and a smear is/can be doen during pg'cy after week 12.
Good Luck and congratulations on your pg'cy.

I know in the USA its standard to have a smear in pregnancy, so I can't imagine its hazardous, but I will also be well overdue for a smear by the time Ive had my baby, it was 3 months overdue then I was PG so it'll be over 4 years if i have one at the 6 week check.Dr's/MW doesn't seem concerned though.
