Is there a rule saying blood can't be taken with a child present?

My midwife came to my house to do my booking in appointment.
She wasn't happy doing this but I have a 16month old and a 3 year old and it's quite a trek to the hosp on the bus.
She said I shouldn't be taking blood with children present so when she came I put ds1 in his room and she kept saying he can't get out can he?In the end she couldn't get any blood and I had to go to walk in centre this is the 1st time I've had probs giving blood.

Anyway on Fri I'm seeing the midwife for more bloods done at the docs and have to take the children. Is she within her right to say she can't take blood with children present or can I give her a piece of my mind and insist she does?

Sorry that's a bit of a ramble [blush}

What a load of rubbish!
Sounds like she lacks confidence and is worried about the kids being there

I've had loads of bloods done - all with my toddler present and in some cases roaming about the room

Creena · 07/03/2007 11:08

Don't think that what you've been told is at all right, to be honest FD. I had DS with me when I had my bloods done and it wasn't a problem at all. In fact, it wasn't even commented on.

cupcakes · 07/03/2007 11:11

ditto everyone else. Had ds and dd with me when getting bloods taken in last pg.

Aloha · 07/03/2007 11:12

Me too. What IS she on about? Loon.

morocco · 07/03/2007 11:13

nope, had lots of bloods taken with my kids there, mind you it backfired a bit first time when it all went a bit pearshaped and blood started running down my arm, kids looked quite worried

TrinityRhino · 07/03/2007 11:15

total loon
no idea why she said that
dd1 saw me have blood taken when I was pg with dd2 and then when at how after the birth of dd3 m/w took blood whilst I sat on the couch and dd1 watched intently and dd2 was roaming about offering me biscuits

TrinityRhino · 07/03/2007 11:16

that should say when at home after...

princessmel · 07/03/2007 11:17

Thats crazy.

I went to the hospital for blood tests and took ds . He was about 2. He just sat on a chair and chatted to the nurses.

She asked if I wanted a curtain or a screen I think it was, put round me but I said it was fine. And it was.

The only awful thing about it was the huge wait.

lovelybird · 07/03/2007 11:17

I had my 16 weeks bloods taken on Friday at the Dr's with 2 yr old DS there. It was a nurse, now a MW and she was great with DS as he was a bit crabby and she made a big fuss of him. Sounds like she's talking crap to me.

lunavix · 07/03/2007 11:17

ds holds my hand for me

dejags · 07/03/2007 11:18

what a load of rubbish.

DS accompanied me to every hospital appt. when I was pregnant with DS2.

Twiglett · 07/03/2007 11:18

my toddler sits on my knee when I have blood tests at the hospital ..

sniff · 07/03/2007 11:19

my children are always present I am wondering why they would cause a proble TBH maybe your MW if no that good at taking blood

foxybrown · 07/03/2007 11:21

mine used to get protective and sit on my knee. Its good for them to see that its all a matter of course and it doesn't hurt. makes their imms and whatnot easier I think.

RedFraggle · 07/03/2007 11:36

My toddler brought me a whole succession of toys from across the room and put them on my knee while the nurse chatted to her and took my blood. It's never been an issue. Maybe your midwife isn't a confident blood taker? My husband always says there is a knack to it and maybe she doesn't have it...

frazzledazzle · 07/03/2007 11:36

Thanks everyone.I thought she was talking rubbish tbh.
When she tried to take my blood all she got literally one drop and yet at the walk in center I wouldn't stop bleeding.
I told her other midwives had took my blood with children present and she still insisted it wasn't right so I was worried I'd got someone in trouble for telling on them!

I'll not stand any nonsense on Fri

What? She told you that with a straight face?! This midwife sounds like a bit of a nutter to be perfectly blunt ! There is absolutely no reason that children can't be present unless your kids were running around brandishing machetes or something equally unsafe, but I'm taking a wild guess that was not the case. Either this midwife has issues with children or with taking blood (both extremely worrying for someone in her profession!) - either way she doesn't know what she's doing or talking about and I would seriously recommend seeing a different midwife in the future. At every antenatal appointment I've ever been to there's always a number of women with children in tow. Not to mention the fact that whether you are pregnant or not there's never a reason they wouldn't take bloods at any doctors appointment if you have your children with you. Wow, that's got to be the craziest thing I've ever heard! lol

Nbg · 07/03/2007 16:40

I can understand why she might of said it.
When I had my routine bloods at 28 weeks, I passed out and my dd was with me.
She was very scared. Dh and the midwife didnt know who to help first, me or poor dd who was gradually walking backwards to the wall.

incognito12 · 07/03/2007 16:48

My Midwife actually said it would be quite postitive for my DS to see my bloods being taken. She did say to me that it meant that I couldnt make a fuss though!! It was fine, and my DS was quite interested and hopefully in the future he wont be too worried if he has to have it done too. My bloods were all taken at home.
