Centre parcs at 34 weeks. Trike or mobility scooter??

Lucinda15 · 27/03/2017 10:55

I'll be going to centre parcs in a month and will be 34 weeks pregnant. As I'm getting bigger ive been getting very breathless and tired. Was initially planning on booking a trike (one of the bikes with two rear wheels as easier to balance) but someone mentioned that a mobility scooter might actually be a good idea. I thought it was daft at first, but more I think about it, more I realise it cld be a good option. After swimming, wandering around the village etc I think I could well be a bit knackered (if current energy levels anything to go by!) and although we have booked a lodge close to centre, thought perhaps a mobility scooter would be a good idea and prevent me holding my DH and DS back if they want to whiz along on bikes.

Am I daft for considering it? Part of me thinks it's a bit indulgent and unnecessary (particularly if someone less able bodied needs one!) but then I am beginning to struggle, even the school run is tiring me out at the moment. Has anyone done similar or have any experience/advice?

Thanks.

I'm going to Centre Parcs Longleat in a few weeks and seen that they definitely hire electric bikes - could that be an option? Not as unusual to ride as a trike, but with some assistance like a mobility scooter?

Lucinda15 · 27/03/2017 20:15

Thanks lemondrop made me chuckle and totally agree!!

So sorry u were ill when u went chosen, I've had a rotten cold/cough with fevers and chills this wknd - felt ghastly! Must have been horrible to have an infection while on hols 😔 We have paid for a lodge closish to the centre, but not bang in the middle. I'm hoping it will do! As far as I know, no trains at elvedon...

otter that's a great idea! I have only come across the electric bike option this afternoon when I started making enquiries. I'm going to look further into that! Cld be just the thing, especially if the trikes are not as user friendly as I thought they might be!

OP I hope you have a wonderful break. I also think a mobility scooter sounds like a great idea. It's frustrating as you want to be able to carry on as normal but sometimes just have to admit you need a bit of extra help. Plus less risk of losing your balance than on a bike/trike!

For those commenting how they climbed mountains etc, that's great you could do that but back pain in pregnancy can be absolutely dibilitating for some women. what happened to empathy?!

CastleFeck · 27/03/2017 20:31

We'd all love to be jogging and ironing at 40 weeks pregnant like a model from a tampax advert, but some women have crap pregnancies. It's not 'each to their own' we don't choose SPD or HG or any of the other awful pregnancy illnesses.

Op hire a scooter and have a lovely time.

TiltedNewt · 27/03/2017 20:37

Well done those of you ironing at 40 weeks. Aren't you fucking great?

Quick question though - do you honestly believe that make you better than someone with SPD who struggles to walk?

Took me 10 minutes to get the 100 yards from my bus stop to my house today. I definitely wouldn't want that on holiday. Especially in somewhere like center parcs. Hire a mobility scooter if it is going to make your holiday more enjoyable OP. Especially if it means you can play with your DS more. There are not more worthy disabilities you should be saving them for, and like someone up thread said, it is for center parcs to provide enough.

TiltedNewt · 27/03/2017 20:40

PS I am wincing at the idea of getting my leg over a bike or a trike. Pretty sure that's the kind of movement which would make my hips pack up for good.

Oysterbabe · 27/03/2017 20:56

TBF SPD is not mentioned in the OP, it just says that she gets tired. I'm sure there wouldn't have been responses suggesting she's being a bit precious if that info had been included.

TiltedNewt · 27/03/2017 21:28

True. I'm just grumpy because I'm in a lot of pain today.

I still think showing off about ironing at 40 weeks is a bit much though Grin

If you want the scooter, you get the scooter girl! Wink who cares what others think!! As long as you're comfortable that's the main thing Grin xx

OP I am like you - with my elder son, I would routinely forget I was pregnant until I got stuck in a gate or something, no physical challenges whatsoever right until I deliver at 40+6. With my next, crippling SPD that I managed with an excellent physio. I never once felt smug about my earlier experience, only aware that I was unusually blessed.

For SPD though, I would suggest forget about ANY kind of cycling or pedalling. My physio was really keen for me to keep my knees at the same level and ideally close together every possible waking minute. If I were you, I wouldn't even attempt it, not even for a two-minute trial spin. It could make delicate joints even worse.

I read the op and thought ... Mobility scooter... YES! Sounds fab. You are on holiday. Anything to make it a relaxed great time for the family.

mellysam · 28/03/2017 18:59

Check that Center Parcs will let you hire trikes/electric bikes. I went to the Longleat one when I was 14 weeks and there were very few things I could do because they have a standard form for activities which doesn't allow pregnant people to have fun Angry - I wanted to do Segway. We did Owl experience instead.

Isthisusernamefree · 29/03/2017 01:34

I'll be 31 weeks when we go with the family for my mum's birthday. Helpfully, she has chosen the exact villa we're staying it - it's basically right at the back of the site, nowhere near the plaza. And she thinks the thought of me on a bike is hilarious. For context, I hate cycling at the best of times and I'm fairly pants at it, I can see it now, everyone will go zooming off and i'll be there 2 hours later huffing and puffing, lugging my bump along with me. I'm off to look into the electric bike option!

kel1493 · 29/03/2017 11:05

TiltedNewt - no showing off at all. Just making a point that even in my due date I didn't sit with my feet up.
How rude are you exactly?

kel1493 · 29/03/2017 11:07

Forgot how touchy some people in here are

youngmum2005 · 29/03/2017 11:16

Please do consider others too. We didn't order a mobility scooter for an elderly relative as we didn't realise she'd need help (we don't live with her and she told us she'd be ok). It turned out we were wrong and should have got one. However they'd all been booked out and we saw several kids riding them around for fun while our relative hobbled along with a frame!

mouldycheesefan · 29/03/2017 11:18

Just walk more get the land train.

TiltedNewt · 29/03/2017 20:43

How rude are you exactly?

Oh, incredibly. But let's not get personal. I'm not going around calling you self righteous am I?

Besides, I have some ironing to make someone else do for me, delicate snowflake that I am.

Trini81 · 02/10/2017 03:20

Hi There, can you give us an update as to how it went at Centre Parcs please? Did you get a trike or mobility scooter? How was walking around the facilities?
Thanks xx

RosyPony · 02/10/2017 03:52

I would enquire about a scooter, I'm 33 weeks and despite being fit and healthy (I only stopped riding my horse 3/4 weeks ago) I can't walk any distance without awful stitch pains (a 1.5 mile dog 'shuffle' is agony), I couldn't lift my leg several times a day to get on a bike either.

I'm gutted, I'd love nothing more than to go for a long walk tomorrow but I just can't manage it.

I do think my three year old would totally steal my mobility scooter though if I had use of one 😂

Lucinda15 · 02/10/2017 07:07

@Trini81 it went well thanks, we had a great time! Seems an age ago Sad

I went with the trike in the end, it was really good. I didn't have any trouble riding it, it steered fine. And it was much better than trying to balance on a bike. We paid a little extra to choose a lodge closer to the centre of the parc, which was well worth it. We were actually in the 'middle' section but on the outskirts so we were next door to the 'centre' section if you see what I mean. That was fine for me, but I could no way have walked back and forth a few times a day. The trike enabled me to ride back and forth a few times a day without any trouble. I did plenty of walking around the centre which was enough for me. I did feel tired and achey but not unpleasantly so, and I think the exercise did me good really. We spent a lot of time in the pool and I bobbed about there lol. It was a really lovely relaxing holiday before baby arrived, who is now 16 weeks and doing very well Smile

If you're planning to go, I recommend the trike, it did me proud. I hope you have a great time.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I can't believe this thread already exists as I was googling for similar information Grin . I'm going to Sherwood CP in a couple of weeks when I'll be 22w so not big yet, but I'm nervous about falling off a bike and wasn't very confident on it when we went last year (first time on a bike in 25 years). I was thinking I could just walk everywhere but for the last 3 weeks I've been crippled with viral arthritis thanks to some godawful flu virus I picked up in March, so walking miles everyday isn't really appealing either!

My MiL has already booked normal bike hire but I might see if it's possible to switch to a trike. Did you see others using them @Lucinda15 or did you stick out a bit riding around on one Blush ?

Lucinda15 · 24/04/2018 11:00

@ThePug hello! Oh yes go for the trike! Other people were riding them yes, not loads but there was the odd one here or there, and I certainly didn’t feel embarrassed or that I stuck out like a sore thumb. It really was the best option for me. I found it easy to ride and there were no issues with struggling to balance with a bump as there wld have been on a normal bike. I say go for it! X and have a lovely time!! X

Good luck for your holiday OP - I hope you enjoy it. I'm 28 weeks and just had a weekend away in Edinburgh. I really did struggle with all the walking involved and had to have regular breaks. I can't remember my first pregnancy as it was 5 years ago but I know this time I'm definitely not very able.

Centre Parcs can be really spread out so anything you can do/use to get around easier is a good idea I think. Have fun!

pennyw85 · 24/04/2018 13:29

Whoops - didn't see this is an old thread!
