So, when do I have to stop wearing hold ups and move on to maternity tights ? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for brands etc ?

dunno about the hold-ups bit but I found M&S maternity tights ok. Not too uncomfortable on the bump. I think I started using them at about six months gone...

hope this helps

thanks for that. Just have a feeling someone told me I shouldn't apparently be wearing hold ups, and wondered if someone could enlighten me. Dull I know.

Is helpful though as will head to M&S to have a look so thank you !

I'm in search of cheap maternity tights. They're too bloody expensive at M&S! I refuse to pay twice as much for soemthing I'm twice as likely to put my finge through.

I have just been wearing extra large. It works for the thin ones but not the thicker opaque or control-type ones. I do ahve to wear pants on the outside though!

I've been wearing Boots firm support tights because of my varicose veins, in extra large (they don't do maternity) - they still fit and I'm now a 30 weeks pregnant size 12. The black ones look like normal opaques and they are hard-wearing and don't fall down. I've had to snip the top of the waistband as they're getting a bit tight but there's still plenty of room over the tummy. They cost about £4.50 a pair but I got mine on a 3 for 2 offer.

I've also got some Emma Jane maternity support tights from Jojomamanbebe (£3 a pair) but I don't think they give enough support and they tend to slip down over my bump and I'm forever hoiking them up.

In the last few weeks of my last pregnancy I split them open down the front seam and sewed a piece of elastic across the top to "expand" them. They are 40 denier with lycra so tough enough not to unravel. I also did this with some fancy tights when I was fed up with wearing opaques.

On the subject of hold-ups I haven't heard that you're not supposed to wear them. If they are comfy and actually stay up I would carry on wearing them! Or check with your midwife to be on the safe side.

Hope this helps!

I used hold-ups through both pgs - couldn't stand having things round my waist once bump got big. Have never heard you shouldn't - it's not like they're super-tight round the thighs, is it? But someone else may know better. Another thing to add to the list of don'ts...

Thanks for that. Will stick with the hold ups for the time being then I think as they still feel comfortable enough. Just think wearing tights is asking for me to end up with bl**dy thrush or something. Trouble is, never seen opaque hold ups so might have to try finding some of them.

H&M sell packs of 2 for a reasonable price. Over the bump ones.

Dophus, if you want to CAT me, I have a pair of black ones in a size 10/12 if you want them. For free.

Unworn aswell.

Just noticed Dophus' bit about her Superman impressions when wearing tights

Apparently (I haven't tried it myself) if you wear normal tights back to front there's more room in the bum bit for the bump!

amidaiwish · 07/03/2007 09:53

these ones here are very comfy

I think that the advice re not wearing hold ups etc is to do with restriction of blood circulation, i.e. wearing hold ups may restrict bllod circulation/supply.

Mothercare do a decent range of maternity tights - they have a few different styles to choose from. If buying from M&S, you may have more luck ordering online as I don't think that all of their stores stock their maternity range. I've tried both M&S and Mothercare tights and have found them to be quite comfortable and hard wearing.

TopShop and H&M stock tights as part of their maternity ranges, so they might be worth a look. I've never tried them personally, so I don't know how good they are. Hope this helps!
