Can doctors refuse you an abrtion

Was reading a thread from US about doctors refusing trans people abortions and also if you have recently had an abortion. In the UK can the clinic or doctor refuse you an abortion for any reason?

In the uk you have to meet the legal grounds for abortion, and two doctors have to agree this.

The grounds are broad, so it would be unlikely that someone who wanted a termination would be refused.

Yes they can, if they do not think you meet the criteria for a legal abortion.

You can however seek a second opinion.

What would be the reason for refusing iv heard tales about people breaking down in the consultation and the nurse not allow it to go ahead that day because the person is classed as emotional unstable and not made a real decision.

Yes doctors are not obliged to sign the abortion form. They can refuse to sign it due to their own personal beliefs. However, they can refer you to another doctor if this is the case.

Yes if they have religious objections against it, eg, if they are catholic. But they should tell you another gp in the surgery to go to

Most non medical terminations in the uk will be granted under this section, as continuing an unwanted pregnancy can be deemed a risk to the mental health of the woman, or her family.

So far, luckily, here in the UK it's not a particularly high hurdle...

Women don't actually have the right to abortion on demand in UK. There's an exemption in the abortion act that allows women to have an abortion if it impacts their mental health. The exemption requires two signatures. It's unlikely for women to be refused and a doctor who has a religious exemption should immediately send you to another doctor. But, legally, the doctors decide. Not the patient:

Of course they can. My friend got pregnant and her other half didnt want the baby, saying it was him or the baby, emotionally forced her into it. The doctor refused to allow it because he could see he was bullying her into it and it wasnt what she wanted. They havent got an obligation to allow it
