What the title says!

I had the usual lectures from the midwife but how big a risk is it? My BMI at booking in was just at 35 but I've put on weight since

I had a BMI of 34 when I fell pregnant, I had lost half a stone as I was going to the gym a lot and feeling good, I carried on with the gym after I found out I was pregnant but now im nearly 12 weeks and I haven't been to the gym in 5 weeks and Im so scared my BMI is going to get really high and ill develop problems :(

Hi Anxious

Well done for losing I couldn't of been bothered going to the gym in the early stages of being pregnant so that's impressive!

Have you put any back on in the last 5 weeks then?

To be honest I haven't weighed myself since my booking appointment with the midwife. I know full well I have definitely put weight on, I can feel it, not loads but most likely the half a stone I lost initially! Guess I will have to bite the bullet and weigh myself, I will probably have to see the consultant.

Emma98 · 20/03/2017 13:49

Anxious have you not had your 12 week scan yet then? I had put on half a stone between booking in and that. I don't like weighing myself in between as I don't have very good scales but I think I've put a bit more on since my scan. Just things feel a bit tighter everywhere!

Yes had my scan, it was about 3 weeks ago, worked the dates out and when I went for my scan I thought I was 11+3 but baby only measured at 9+3! So it was like I had to start all over again lol cant wait to pass the 12 weeks mark!

I do try and watch what I eat but since ive stopped the gym its like all my bad habits have peaked again. I think I might start swimming rather than the gym.

Hi Anxious, if it helps I have found that once I was over the initial sickness, I was able to keep going at the gym (currently 30 weeks and still going strong). I do low-impact cardio (10 - 15 mins cross-trainer, then 20 mins low-impact aerobics, non-weighted squats and lunges in a corner of the mats area), then some pilates (for glutes and hamstrings rather than abs) and some yoga stretches. It has really helped me keep the weight under control and I've been surprised by how much better it has made me feel - backache etc has been really minimal. Obviously this isn't for everyone (and I'm sure it would be much harder to find the time if I already had a child), but don't feel that you can only do swimming - if you are careful and sensible, there is no reason not to keep up a gym routine. I look pretty stupid with my bump hanging out, but I find I don't really care!

anxiousandpregnant · 20/03/2017 14:24

Thanks mizzles that's really helpful, I would love to start going again, I really enjoyed it. Now I've had the 5 week break do you think its wise I start it up again? Or shall I just build it up slowly? I tend to do classes rather than the gym, like zumba, pilates etc.

My BMI was 35 at booking in with this pregnancy. I am extremely fit - I just hadn't lost much of the weight with DC2. And to be honest I have been eating a lot because I've been sick all the way through - unfortunately eating has been the only way to feel better!

I'm booked in for a homebirth - it will hopefully be my second. Despite my BMi I am considered low risk. Everything else is fine and though the MLU has a BMi cut off, I hadn't planned on going there anyway. Basically the MLU can't offer me anything a homebirth doesn't, and if I am going into hospital it is because I am either not coping at home and want an epidural or it's an emergency. So bypassing the MLU completely. I've put on two stone at 38 weeks. So it's almost over and I'm trying not to let the weight thing get to me. It's hard not to feel shame but at the same time - it was it is. I'm fat right now but the baby is fine and my pregnancy is low risk. The weight will be dealt with after the baby is born Smile

Hi Anxious

I would probably check with the instructor for any classes, as you may need to modify some of the moves (e.g. if your abs separate, as mine did quite early, you shouldn't be doing crunches or front planks), but as a general rule there is no reason not to carry on doing what you were doing before, as long as you keep hydrated, don't overheat and make sure you don't fall over (obviously that doesn't apply if your doctor tells you there is a specific reason to avoid exercise) . The guidance I got was that you shouldn't be so out of breath that you couldn't carry on a conversation. Anything high impact can put a bit of strain on your joints and pelvic floor as the baby gets bigger, but you can easily adjust most moves to keep comfortable (e.g. bounce rather than jump). Anything that strengthens your back and legs will probably help cope with the additional weight later on. Hope that helps!
