Maternity Clothes Rant.........Grrr

I felt rather smug at not having to wear mat gear until 24 weeks, on account of a long torso (not being thin, sadly). I knew this would come back to haunt me.

Now, at 27 weeks, I've found that maternity t-shirts and tops that were sold to me in good faith are sitting just below my belly button and I don't even have a huge bump!!!

Today I entered the sanctuary of Formes - even for me, the tops are hugely long (plenty of growth left) yet beautifully cut.

AAAAArgh - why can't all maternity retailers be realistic about length?

Rant over, steps off soap box......

It's bad enough that there are so few about, let alone what's there not even fitting properly! I'm lucky as I live in London but even in sizeable towns such as Brighton or Plymouth I've seen, oooh, up to 2 shops that sell mat.clothes. Couldn't even see anything I liked, let alone build a wardrobe out of them! Thank the Lord for the internet I say, but then it really is pot luck as you can't try the stuff on!!

The negative about Formes (apart from the cost!) is that the trouser's elastic panel bits also come down a long way - so other non-Formes tops don't fit them, and you have to buy an "outfit" to get it to work. My best buy are trousers that have stretchy elastic waists and no elastic panels - Hennes did some this year. Blooming marvellous tops are also generously cut.

I am having the opposite problem, lots of maternity stuff is too long for my 5ft body, even with bump!
Very short torso means vests and t shirts are clinging not only over my bum but half way down the backs of my legs too

It's too much to hope for that they's do a maternity short-ar$e range somewhere isn't it?!

gingernut · 28/06/2004 12:52

Bibiboo, I'm with you, just over 5 foot and the tops cling to my bum and thighs - so flattering. (but then, don't you have problems with non-maternity clothes too? I do).

Perhaps I can chop the bottoms off some of my tops and send them to you, highlander?

I'm not very big - about 5'3" but I find the too short syndrome quite a bit as well. If I wear over the bump trousers then I'm OK but I've got some under the bump jeans and very few tops meet them so I spend all day tugging them up and the tops down - such a good look .

No maternity shortarse range exists, I'm pretty sure. As a notorious shortarse, I'd have found it.

muddaofsuburbia · 28/06/2004 13:24

I'm 5ft adn I found that only Next do their Maternity stuff in petite lengths - but just in trousers, not for the top half IYSWIM.

Is the new TopShop range worth investigating?

gingernut · 28/06/2004 13:24

Us shortarses just aren't supposed to get pg

gingernut · 28/06/2004 13:26

mudda, Blooming Marvellous do shorter length trousers in some styles. But no shortarse tops anywhere that I've found.

Bronze · 28/06/2004 13:52

no us tall uns arent sposed to either. Shops are finally realising that tall people exist and also a lot of them are starting maternity ranges, but to be both seems to be a sin. Last pgcy I ended up wearing my husbands t-shirts and I had one pair of trousers which I washed overnigth and wore continuously. I felt soo frumpy. I'm getting to that stage now, not one to show off my belly when pregnant, dont think stretchmarks are amazingly attractive but havnt a clue what I'm supposed to do

my dh suggested I could wear ds's playtent (£15 from ASDA) .

Bron, you just have to laugh or else you cry! The other thing I do is whinge down the phone to my Mum. . After all, it's partly her fault.

Sorry to hijack your thread highlander but as yet another pg shortarse (5'2", I can recommend the Next 3 pack maternity cotton t-shirts. 3/4 length sleeve, v-neck come in white, black and red. Proving v. practical for everyday and at work. Not too long in the bod at all.
