Hello all. Quick bit of advice please! I am 8 wks pg and today was offered a big promotion at work. Great news (and well deserved, ahem!) but I feel really guilty about accepting it without telling the boss about the pg. I wasn't planning to tell work for a few weeks, haven't even told my family yet. So show of hands - would you tell or keep quiet?

It shouldn't matter - they can't take the promotion away because you're pregnant. If they do they are on very dodgy ground!!

colditz · 05/03/2007 20:00

Keep quiet for God's sake keep quiet. Bosses can go really funny with pregnant staff - even the most pleasant and accomadating ones. Take the promotion - they can't take it off you for being pregnant, although they may wish they could

mollymawk · 05/03/2007 20:00

I wouldn't see any need to mention it. Congratulations (twice!).

ImaWurzel · 05/03/2007 20:01

Quiet. They may not follow thru with offer.(I'm only guessing)

SoupDragon · 05/03/2007 20:01

I think I'd accept it and then tell them though.

funnypeculiar · 05/03/2007 20:01

How well do you know your boss?
How are they likely to respond to your pregnancy?

I think I would probably keep the two things separate, as ime (as boss & boss-ee!), boss's aren't always delighted to hear this news... but can understand why you would feel like you'd want to.

If you haven't told family yet, reckon it's fair enough to wait...

Frizbe · 05/03/2007 20:01

quiet you don't need to tell anyone until 12 weeks.

CountTo10 · 05/03/2007 20:01

I would go with caution and not mention it for now. Leaglly you're not obliged to tell you employers you're pg for some time so you wouldn't be acting inappropriately. Congrats on both the promo and pg btw!!

funnypeculiar · 05/03/2007 20:02

Oh, and if you do tell, defn accept first. And then say, btw, wasn't going to tell you yet, but another bit of good news.
ie accept FIRST - do not give option of changing minds...

TheBlonde · 05/03/2007 20:02

keep quiet

ponylove · 05/03/2007 20:02

DEfinitely keep quiet. You shouldn't feel pressurised to tell anyone before you're ready. Even my DH who is managing director of his own company agrees.

mandler · 05/03/2007 20:05

Thanks for the unanimous advice - i'll take the money and run (so to speak!)

Definately keep quiet. No need to know just yet Congratulations on promotion and little bean.

aprilmeadow · 05/03/2007 20:09

Being on the May 07 thread with Show of Hands i think she would def say keep quiet

incy · 05/03/2007 20:12

Definitely do not tell them !

When I was last pregnant (about 3 months in) I was verbally offered a promotion by my boss. I said I was really pleased and would gladly accept but had an attack of conscience and told her I was pregnant.

The next day she said perhaps I needed time to think about the promotion as I would have a lot on my plate with the pregnancy/baby coming - I said nothing to think about and I was really looking forward to my new job.

Two weeks later a male colleage confided to me that he had been promoted (into my supposed promotion). When I mentioned it to my boss she denied saying anything to me about a definite job offer and said it was just a casual discusion as to if I would be interested. As it was all verbal with no witnesses it would have been her word against mine.

Never again.

chocolatekimmy · 05/03/2007 20:48

Keep quiet, sure you rightly deserve the promotion if they have offered it to you.

Nothing they can do about it even if they are a bit miffed about it. If you feel the need in the future, you could probably get away with saying you didn't even know for sure that you were pregnant.

You don't have to notify them for months anyway, just in writing 21 days before you intend to start leave (but wouldn't recommend that as a risk assessment needs to be done)

MrsMcJnr · 05/03/2007 21:19

Keep quiet - well, that's what I planned until I needed so much time off, but they've been lovely about it!

funnypeculiar · 05/03/2007 21:26

incy that is so crap

incy · 05/03/2007 21:40

I know FP - and it was a female boss !!!
