senokot tablets - safe in pregnancy

Are they safe to take in pregnancy - don't mean the fibre-drink sachets but the tablets with senna in. Thanks.

Lactulose is better. Senna can theorticly start contractions off (although unlikely)

Constipation
If you feel constipated, as a first treatment you should make sure you drink more fluids and increase the level of fibre in your diet. If constipation persists, you can try bulk-forming laxatives such as ispaghula husk or lactulose. If these do not work, you can try a dose of senna, the stimulant laxative. If you are in the later stages of pregnancy, you should avoid using senna as, theoretically, it could cause uterine contractions.

I always only recommend lactulose to women, along with lots of water!

Thanks both of you, have tried lactulose by the gallon and fibre husk drink but to no avail. Thought the GP mentioned seonakot but wanted to be sure. Thanks x

Sennacot was certainly deemed OK when I was pregnant; the midwives on the ante-natal ward gave them out like smarties.

Glycerine suppositories are safe and very effective if you are really struggling.

Thanks, I had not thought of suppositories -pregnancy it is all glamour !
