A Jonah is someone who brings bad luck.

I wouldn't use it myself.

Although he did make good in the end, he was not a lucky man.
I take it you don't know the story? More here .

DeviousDaffodil · 04/03/2007 19:20

It is associated with bad luck. But a cute name.

DumbledoresGirl · 04/03/2007 19:20

I like it. Taught a boy called Jonah once who was nice enough. But I do think it is linked with bad luck. How about Jonas?

nally · 04/03/2007 19:20

I like the name personally

funnypeculiar · 04/03/2007 19:20

Nice name.
Don't like the connotations much myself, but susepct mst people wouldn't get past the nice name bit

newby29 · 04/03/2007 19:22

Hmm, yes, do know the story - but didnt realise that it had become associated with a person who brings bad luck iyswim. But i think if thats the case it probably rules it out...shame though as boys names so hard!

We have a Jonah st ouir school. I always associate it with a song we used to sing in Sunday School:

Listen to my tale
Of Jonah and the whale
Way down in the middle of the ocean.

How did he get there?
Whatever did he wear?
Way down in the middle of the ocean.

There was loads more I think but it is lost in the depths of my mind. Probably just as well.

largeginandtonic · 04/03/2007 19:44

I have a Jonah! He is 4 and everyone loves his name, as do i. Jonah came good in the end you know

Enid · 04/03/2007 19:45

I like the sound of it but the unlucky connotation always put me off

brimfull · 04/03/2007 19:46

lovely name!!

Blandmum · 04/03/2007 19:46

I quite like the name but some people do think that it is unlucky

Nemo2007 · 04/03/2007 19:47

I really like it, friends eldest son is called Jonah and it suits him.

quietmouse · 04/03/2007 19:53

I always thought it meant unlucky.

It's ok but because of that association, I wouldn't use it.

(it also sounds to me like it's missing a bit off the end!)

Hulababy · 04/03/2007 20:02

I know of a Jonah - he must be about 3 by now. I have never considered the negative aspect of it; seems quite a nice name on this little biy anyway.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/03/2007 20:12

It was my first choice if we had a boy. I love this name.

I have such STRONG VIEWS on this one

why would anyone give their child a name that means 'bringer of bad luck' to so many seafarers and James Herbert fans

bad, bad, bad, bad, bad idea

Seansgirl · 04/03/2007 20:24

Its ok. I have never heard of the bad luck thing.

Twiglett · 04/03/2007 20:26

Would you call your child Judah?

same thing

WideWebWitch · 04/03/2007 20:26

I like Jonah.

largeginandtonic · 04/03/2007 20:29

No bad luck with my Jonah! I got his name from 'sleepless in Seattle' a very long time ago. I always liked it, didnt look it up before i named him but knew the bible story.

WestCountryLass · 04/03/2007 21:53

Seeing as I am not a Christian (complete atheist), the biblical connotations of Jonah would not bother me.

If you like it, go for it

exbury · 04/03/2007 21:55

Not the same, I know - but how about Noah?
