Feel robbed with an anterior placenta :(

Hi ladies,

I was just hoping some mums with anterior placentas could give me their experience with fetal movements?

I had my 20 week scan today (I'm 19+6) and although I found out I'm going to have a lovely and healthy little boy I can't help but feel disheartend and robbed that I won't feel all the lovely movements most mums talk about.

I don't believe I've felt him at all yet and I'm scared that I won't fully feel him kick and punch later on.

It worries me more that with the placenta muffling everything I won't be able to realize any reduced fetal movements.

It's really upset me on such a wonderful day.

Any advice or experiences would be great xx

Hi I'm currently 22+3wks with a little girl and have an anterior placenta and I feel loads of movement especially these last 2weeks. I'm currently lay on the sofa and she's kicking my hand and I can see it through my clothes! I wouldn't worry at all and just give it a bit more time x

Imscarlet · 03/03/2017 17:38

I had an anterior placenta. I think I was about 22 weeks when I first felt movement, it felt a little like I had a teeny tiny fish in my belly. I laid down on the sofa and cried when I felt it. I felt lots of movement as the pregnancy progressed. Uncomfortable at times, I can't imagine what it would be like without the anterior placenta. You will feel movement and lots of it!

ApocalypseNowt · 03/03/2017 17:38

Two anterior placentas - felt loads of kicks and movement....you could see my tummy move a lot too.

No placenta previa.

Both babies were back to back though which i think is a bit more common with anterior placentas.

StillaChocoholic · 03/03/2017 17:41

I'm 35 weeks and have an anterior placenta. Can't say the movements with this baby are all that different to my first, I just felt them later. I still have moments when baby moves and my whole body moves with him and can quite often see body parts move in my belly, usually a leg I think.
I have noticed that I can be looking at my bump and can see it move but not really feel the movement but I think this is where the placenta is as it's always in the same place.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/03/2017 17:47

I've had an anterior placenta twice & you honestly do still feel quite a lot of movement. It felt more cushioned early on than it did with my first 2 (who had posterior placentas) but it was definitely still there Smile. I suspect I have an anterior again this time too because the early movements I'm getting are very soft. Once you get to about 28/30 weeks there's hardly any difference at all.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 03/03/2017 18:04

Ds2 treated me like his personal trampoline. The doctor agreed that I probably was bruised. Also extremities scraped down the inside. I looked like the alien was in there. Dh wouldn't look at the bump as it freaked him out.
There are pros and cons with every pg.
I am sure as the baby gets bigger you will feel him kicking your bladder and other internal organs.
Please don't feel cheated as you have a healthy boy.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 03/03/2017 18:09

I've had both and I ageee the difference is marginal.

paperandpaint · 03/03/2017 18:14

It can and very well might move! I had an anterior placenta at my 12 week scan, placenta previa at my 20 week scan and a totally normal placenta at a 32 week scan!

harleysmammy · 03/03/2017 19:07

When i found out i had anterior placenta i honestly felt like shit because i thought i just wanna feel my baby. At 21 weeks i started feeling movements and 23 weeks i could see him, im 32 weeks almost and he's always on the move. Dont worry x

toomuchtimereadingthreads2016 · 03/03/2017 19:15

I have AF this time didn't last time the difference has been the placing of the kicks not really feeling them, especially now at 24 weeks it's easy to see my tummy moving and others can feel kicks from outside xx

Caterina99 · 03/03/2017 20:08

I had an anterior placenta. I obviously didn't have anything to compare it to, but I never really gave it a second thought. Could feel kicks just fine.

millyhopemum · 03/03/2017 21:47

Thanks guys.

It means a lot to read all your messages. I am forever grateful I have a healthy boy and I know that's all that matters.

I think I wasn't expecting to be told I have a AP and movement could be different but in all honesty I feel so much better knowing it hasn't made much of a difference with you ladies having one.

I'm all new to this and every day is a new learning curve for me.

Good luck in all your pregnancys ladies Wink xx

I had anterior placenta with both pregnancies

With dc1 i felt light fluttery movements from 22ish weeks but movements were never very strong throughout pg (DC wasn't particurarly wriggly when he came out either - bloody is now though). At 28 weeks I went in for monitoring as I hadn't felt movement for a while. The monitor picked up lots of movement but I couldn't feel a thing - the little swine was hiding behind the placenta!

DC2 - omg the kicks and punches were brutal, but again from about 22 weeks. I think the placenta was higher that time or DC2 is a brute.

kep1979 · 04/03/2017 10:16

I've had anterior placenta in a prior pregnancy (and again this time) as well as posterior twice and I can honestly say i noticed no difference in feeling movements. With my first pregnancy I didn't feel movements until later on (posterior placenta) whereas I did much earlier in the next pregnancy (anterior). So I really think it doesn't make a massive difference. And at the end you will be booted so much either way!

MiniLop · 04/03/2017 10:18

I had a posterior placenta the first time and an anterior placenta the second time.
Although I didn't start feeling movements until much later, by the end it felt exactly the same as the first time!

sailorcherries · 04/03/2017 15:18

I have an anterior placenta and definitely feel strong movements although they didn't get regular until about 26w. However, my poor OH has only felt baby move once as, although I can feel them, most of the time it isn't strong enough to feel on the outside.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/03/2017 15:28

About half of pregnancies have an AP just like about half at posterior. It just means it's on the front of your uterus rather than the back. It really won't make any difference like pp said. It won't move either contrary to pp but if it was very close to the cervix it could grow over it but you would have been warned at your 5 month scan if that was likely.

I've had both kinds and the only difference was that I didn't feel kicks until about 20 weeks with AP and then I could see and feel elbows, hands, feet and knees from third trimester-ish. I felt flutters (like trapped wind actually!) from about 16 weeks with PP and I could see the outline of my baby all the time from about 22 weeks including her spine. It made me feel a bit ill tbh!

If you were at risk of placenta previa you would have been told because that is something to worry about.

Shamoffour · 04/03/2017 15:31

3 posterior placentas
1 anterior

Apart from feeling kicks later (around 22 weeks) no difference. Actually sometimes I would watch my tummy move but couldn't feel it which was a bit strange.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 04/03/2017 19:25

They would have told you if you have placenta preavia as they check for it at that scan. It'll say on your notes anterior high or something like that. All anterior means is its at the front it's nothing to worry about.

calimommy · 05/03/2017 05:27

Ok I didn't read all the posts before me but my 10cents:

My last pregnancy I had the opposite, posterior placenta and aside from having near constant movement, usually worse when I was trying to sleep, baby was also facing outwards up until 3 days before he was born. Think elbows, knees, hands, feet. It was unbelievably uncomfortable and often painful. Then one day, almost no movement, cue a panicked trip to the mat A&E. Turns out he had simply rolled over in anticipation of exiting 3 days later.
You will get loads of movement so don't worry! Lots of women don't feel much with their first till 25wks x

jpeg28 · 05/03/2017 11:08

I haven't read everything either... but he is my experience so far.

Anterior placenta found at 20 week scan. Didn't feel baby move really until about 24/25 weeks. Movement doesn't seem to have a pattern, because I can't feel lots of it! Went to MAU at 27 weeks (I think!)because I was really worried that I had felt nothing all day! Baby was kicking away and I couldn't feel a thing! I did have days where I felt lots of movement and other days where I didn't.
Since about 30 weeks movements have changed and that worries me too! It's more rolls and painful movements but again it as many as others! I only feel it on the sides and now at the very top of my bump.
33+5 now and yesterday didn't really feel a lot during the day and then got into bed and felt him stretching and pushing my bump on both sides!
My MW said I will know when I'm not feeling enough movement for me and I shouldn't compare myself to others. I think along with an anterior placenta I have a chilled out baby (well I hope so!)
