If any one can help that will be great.

I am 38 weeks today and saw my doc this morning. She did the usual listen, measure then said if I hadn't had the baby when i was 40 weeks I should see the mw. She asked if I had any growth scans (yes i did have my notes with me) and I said no. She thinks I am very big for a first baby, but she called the delivery suite and they said not to worry and I should go with the flow. baby is in the right place according to doc.

have only been seeing doc over last few months as mw v scatty and just didn't rate her (she has left the practice now)

Is this usual? am worried baby will be HUGE! Should I see mw next week anyway just to check things? Will a mw have diff views from the doc?

I had to go to hospital when 40 weeks to arrange an induction date. The very handsome, south American doc (very YOUNG) offered me a sweep, but I didn't take it - too embarassed at how dashing he was! I was HUGE - though they never said that was the reason for the sweep. I think it was standard procedure. Anyway, baby came on his own 4 days later, was fairly big for a first - 8lb 3 oz. Honestly, I was too huge for majority of my maternity clothes. Somebody said to me, 'It seems like you've been pregnant forever' as I was showing so early and was huge for a long time. I am sure it will all be fine. I think it is worth seeing more people as the more opinions the better.

Surely at 38 weeks you should be seeing a m/w every week now?

TheBlonde · 01/03/2007 14:02

Perfectly normal spongecake
I saw MW this week at 38 weeks, my next app is at 40 weeks

This 'scaremongering' by GPs (and sometimes midwives)really annoys me. So many women are told they are 'too' small or 'too' big and then obviously get very concerned unnecessarily. At the end of pregnancy you would normally see the midwife/GP every couple of weeks anyway, wouldn't you? (Sorry - can't remember.) If you are still pregnant at 40 weeks (and you probably will be) there's no harm in seeing the midwife for a routine check-up.

Even IF the midwife thinks the baby is big it is rare for a woman to be unable to give birth vaginally because the baby is too big for her pelvis - we usually grow babies that our bodies can accommodate, so don't worry too much. Also, it's a myth that it's easier to give birth to a smaller baby.

Good luck.

I think the message has got garbled in the telling of it. I think all the dr meant was that your next a-n check-up would be at 40w - provided you hadn't had the beby by then, as you wouldn't need the check-up if you had.

Nothing sinister.

Sponge - if you have worries in between time just go ahead and see the MW

divastropwantstodrop · 01/03/2007 20:59

it is normal now to have a/n checks every 2 weeks up till the end.but phone your mw or gp if you are worried about anything.

I too have just had 38 week appt, my next appt is at 40 weeks with MW, assuming I'm still pregnant then!

According to the schedule of appts I was given at start of pregnancy, this is the usual plan...next one after that will be antenatal clinic at 40 +10 if still no baby appeared, for a checkup/check of liquor level and sweep offered if appropriate.
Hoping not to need that tho!
