This is my 2nd pregnancy and was very sick with DS1 but managed to work but this time round the exhaustion and constant nausea (only actually vomit a couple of times a day)is really getting to me. I have had 1 week off work and feel guilty but can't imagine going back feeling like this. Am hoping that like the first time the sickness will stop at 13 weeks & I will be able to get on with life..

Don't beat yourself up about it. If you don't feel well enough to go to work then don't go. I had horrific sickness with my dd and was signed off work for a couple of weeks. If you go and see your doctor and explain how you are feeling they will be able to help. Most doctors are very sympathetic and realise how awful you must feel and if you ask they will sign you off work. If you have been signed off then your employer can't except you to go back. Don't feel guilty, the health of you and your bump is more important than work!

Hope you feel better soon, you have all my sympathy!!

You are not at all alone. I am on pregnancy no. 2 and whilst I had minor sickness for 2 weeks with DS1, I have had nigh on 4 months of quite severe sickness, tiredness and moodiness this time around. I have not actually been physically ill but the feelings of wanting to have been there all the time. I have lost weight also as I have not wanted to eat. I have had more than 8 days off so far with it, but my employer has been very sympathetic so I've been quite fortunate. You do feel a bit daft though because pregnancy is supposed to be a healthy and happy time but by God, some days you just want to yell and hide under the covers. Good luck though, hopefully it will subside and you'll feel better soon.

I as signed off for 8 weeks!
The employment law states that time off for pregnancy related illnesses cannot be treated in the same way as any other illness so don't worry about it.

i was signed off for 2 weeks, then we had a verbal agreement that I wouldn't come in until 10 am, otherwise I would have been signed off until dd arrived! most caring employers are willing to negotiate. i also had a friend who used her holidays to have every friday off as tiredness made it worse. and once you are past week 14 ish you can have tablets to control it - doesn't stop the nausea or wretching, but at least most of the food satys in your stomach!
here's to the plastic bag brigade ( I found stray ones in jacket & car pockets for months after dd arrived)
good luck - hope you get better

Don't beat yourself up! I'm freelance and work nights and took myself off rota at 7 weeks - there was no way on earth I could have gone in. Unfortunately I don't get paid unless I work so I'm feeling rather poor now but I felt so ill I didn't care.

Now I'm having trouble getting back on the rota as they've forgotten about me...

Some people sail through and some just don't.

oh poor you. I had this with dd2 and it was horrible. I really couldn't do anything and lost loads of weight. The strangest things made me feel sick (the smell of fabric conditioner...this meant i couldn't do any ironing!, looking at the computer, watching television) it was really horrible and there was no way i could work in that state. You cannot help the way you are feeling and you should be off until you feel better. Mine went almost overnight at 13 weeks. I hope you feel better soon

Thanks guys. My manager is being supportive but I feel like I am becoming a bit agraphobic, having gone from being very active to hardly leaving the house except to drag myself to work. I almost feel like the longer I leave it the harder it will be to go back.. but it's probably all part of the low mood I am in. I'm 10 weeks pg.

You poor thing, I know exactly how you feel! I tried working from home for the first week or so but then my Director told me to log off and concentrate on getting better etc. which was a big relief! I'm now in my third week of being off (signed off with Hyperemesis) and I'm due back in next Tuesday or Wednesday (can't remember!). Like you, I can't bear the thought of venturing out of the house and everything is completely draining me. That with feeling and being sick all day and night (even with anti-sicknesstablets)is driving me crazy...

I do hope you feel better soon - how far gone are you? I'm nearly 11 weeks now and hope this will die down. I'm feeling half human today which is a big improvement on the last few weeks so I hope it is a sign that this will fade away so I can get on with things. Saying that, I'm dreading the thought of going back to work!!!!

Thanks PurpleLostPrincess, I hope you carry on feeling better, try not to read too many threads (like I have) about those poor women who are sick for the whole pregnancy! I am 10 weeks tomorrow and have decided thanks to everyone's encouragement to stop giving myself a hard time. I guess my body will tell me when I feel ready to back to work and I have to ignore this internal 'pull yourself together' voice.

Aniroonie: you poor thing. I'm a teacher and got pregnant at the beginning of the summer holidays. I was pretty much bedbound 24/7 for 3 months, and there's no way I could have gone into work.

THIS WILL END!

IT IS FINITE!

Just keep coming on Mumsnet to keep you sane. Well, entertained, anyway.

Hope it stops really soon for you.

Oh yeah - the agrophobia - I didn't leave the house for about 2 months - luckily it was jan and feb so no-one was about. DH started getting really worried about me becoming unsocialised. Dont' worry - you will feel like going out once you start feeling better. I knew I was feeling better when I started thinking about going back to work (only a week ago!) before then the thought made me really anxious and panicky.

I'm 14+5 and started feeling much much better about a week ago - although have had a bad eve tonight but I think I've turned the corner.... (please!!!)
