Hi- any advice gratefully recieved- not actually for me but for my mate.

She has been getting brown discharge- (sorry if TMI) at 5-6 weeks and now at 8-10 weeks. Her doctor told her this was normal (at 5wks).

Obv its very worrying tho- I suggested she calls antenatal clinic and tells them as apparently her doctor said she should only call him if she got fresh blood/pain. Is this right?

thanks thanks thanks!

Brown blood may be left over from the first bleed - she should go to the EPU if she has bright red or pink (i.e. fresh) blood, especially in a rush. However she does need reassurance - her first mw appt should be coming up, can she ring them for a chat?

glitterkitty · 28/02/2007 10:37

Thanks toadstool- hopefully she will speak to a MW and they can put her mind at rest.

this happened to me (after an initial bleed at 5 weeks) all throughout the pregnancy.

was scary every time it happened, but ds is now 18 months and a little star!

agree that if it's bright red and fresh then go to doc asap, but maybe just speak to midwife about this as soon as she can and get some reassurance. i'm sure she'll be fine xx

GraceKelly - lots of people do seem to have this but I know that that does not make it any easier to cope with. I have had this a lot on and off (I'm about 8 1/2 weeks) but I might not be a good case as I'm not sure that my pregnancy is viable at the moment. It can be caused by cervical erosion, or it can be something to do with the pregnancy but it is not always a bad thing. Sometimes it happens around the time your AF would be due. It should be checked out though for peace of mind as much as anything. Please tell her that if it turns red and/or she has pain, she should seek advice immediatley. Better safe than sorry.

Please tell her to seek advise if she has any discomfort or cramping. I had brown spotting and a bit of cramping and ended up with an ectopic. Really hope this doesn't happen for your friend. Good luck

lulumama · 28/02/2007 11:32

brown blood is often old blood ... BUT as pinkelephant has pointed out, can be a sign of ectopic...esp if pain cramps or shoulder pain...it is easy for the doc to say it is normal, but when you are the pregnant woman, it is easier said than done

did she have a scan at 5 -6 weeks?

glitterkitty · 28/02/2007 13:25

No, shes having her first scan in 2 weeks time.

Thank you all for your help!

hello all and thanks for the messages, thanks also to the gem that is glitterkitty who posted my problem - I am now registered on mumsnet.

lulumama - I feel no pain, althou I did feel terrible pain at 5-6 weeks, which the doc told me was normal as was the brown discharge. Now I'm getting it again (it varies from dark brown to pale pick) and had a major panic attack 'cause I read on another on-line forum that it can be serious.... Anyho I got an appt with the doc tomorrow as I haven't had my mw appt yet - also had no scan which is not until 14 march.

Thanks all xxxx

MegMog ? I know it is really hard but try and rest and drink plenty of water. If the discharge turns to blood or you have pain that feels like more than ligament stretching I think you should call your Early Pregnancy Unit at your nearest hospital, chances are you Dr will send you there anyway and you can actually book yourself in. Deep breaths, it doesn?t mean the end hon but don?t take any chances. Thinking about you.

MrsMcJnr · 28/02/2007 13:42

God I am so so embarrased - I called GlitterKitty GraceKelly, god knows why (pregnancy brain?!) Sorry!

megmog1 - it is not uncommon to have some bleeding at 4, 8 12 and 16 weeks when a period would have beed due and this is most likely what is happening to you. However, if it is accompanied by increasing pain at all you must contact a doctor.

When you see the doctor tomorrow it is most likely he will refer you to the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. In our area you can actually phone directly yourself.

I myself had brown staining in 2 pregnancies which were both fine - it is worrying though.

lulumama · 28/02/2007 15:11

well, i do hope that you have a positive outcome, and that you get an early scan ,for your own reassurance

cupcake78 · 28/02/2007 15:19

Please don't give up hope yet. Haven't read whole thread but it could just be hormonal changes that causes it.

5 weeks is nothing to worry about and that it stopped shows that it is ok. 8-10 weeks could just be a slight bleed because your period would be due.

Speak to yor doc/mw/epu and arrange for a scan to settle your mind.

I am sure it will be fine althought I understand it can be very frightening.

megmog1 · 01/03/2007 16:02

Hi All, Thought I'd let you know the latest. It's all good! Went to the docs today to be ushered off to EPU who scanned me (internal scan - not good!!) and I saw the little darling and its little heart was beating. I was told to take it easy and rest - good thing hubby was there 'cause I was basically told not to do any housework!! The size of the fetus suggested 11 weeks and 1day, so no great diff to what I calculated 10w+6days. Can't wait to reach 12 weeks thou! Thanks for all your support.

MrsMcJnr · 01/03/2007 16:05

Great news, congratulations! Rest up and relax

mears · 02/03/2007 10:05

That's good news
