Scan- big baby how accurate

Hi I've posted before as my OH is pregnant and has stuffled mentally throughout it , just been diagnosed with prenatal / antenatal depression.

Just to make matters worse (she feels as though it's the end of the world) a scan has shown the baby to be on the 95th centile, this has added a spanner in the works as she's convinced it's her fault (even though she's barely eaten since she found out) she constantly talks about the fact it's apparently big from a growth scan.

Can anyone share stories of what estimate of weight you were given and how big the baby was whether bigger or smaller.

She's 29 weeks almost now and baby was measuring between 31-32 weeks for different bits of its body.

Also she's having the GD test tomorrow repeated as it was inconclusive last week.

Bubs 33w today is always measuring and weighing slightly more then average

31 w heading up for 5lbs 😱😱😱

Another scan at 34&37

Be interesting if bubs come out the size they say

Will let you know in 6w 😂

My baby was on the 90th centile at one of our growth scans (think it was at 28weeks), which put the fear of God in me! His femur measurements always measured a good couple of weeks ahead and the weight was calculated on this because they never managed to get a head circumference measurement due to position. Baby boy arrived 12 days before due date and weighed 7lb9oz. So the scans were fairly accurate in my case but he was quite a long baby rather than "big".
Growth scans can be inaccurate though, my sister was told repeatedly that she was going to have a very small baby and he was 9lb!

Thanks all for your replies, I did show them all to her and I think it's helped her a bit.
It seems the scans can be fairly accurate then maybe not in determining the weight but if they say the baby will be big then it's unlikely to be a 6lb-er for example.

To answer the couple of questions people asked - yep she's definitely getting help with the mental health side of things, she's been referred to a psychiatrist and now the mental health MW will visit once a week until the baby is here (and after obviously)

And the reason she has growth scans well she conceived through IVF and a few weeks ago they offered her scans at 28 and 32 weeks, ironically when we went to the 28 week one they had cancelled it saying she didn't meet the criteria for extra growth scans, so the consultant measured her tummy with the tape measure and panicked as she was measuring very very small so she immediately referred her for a scan within the next half hour, only to be told baby was just very low down and is in fact quite big! So she's having the extra scans now anyway!

I'll try and update once she's had it if I remember.

My first was apparently going to be a small baby. 7lb10oz when you I was 5ft2 and a size eight was enough to make my eyes water.

ButtMuncher · 11/02/2017 04:46

I measured 50th centile throughout and was estimated to have a 7ish lb baby at 40w. When he was finally here after failed induction/c section at 38w he was 8lbs 6oz - not huge but considering he had a few more weeks potentially of cooking had they not tried to induce for reduced movement, it was quite conceivable that he'd have been a 10+liber! My brother was a home birth with no pain relief at an eye watering 10 13oz Shock

ExcitedMamaToBe · 11/02/2017 04:55

At 28 weeks my baby was measuring on 90th centile, 31 weeks was measuring way above so referred me for a growth scan. I had the scan during the week there so was 32 weeks and they said baby was measuring 6lb already so I'm being tested for GD this week coming. Not worrying tho, big baby's run in my family. I myself may have been over 11lb when born Blush haha obvs I've no idea tho how accursate scan is cause baby's not making an appearance any time soon hopefully

I was scanned a week before I had my DD and told that she measured 7lb 8oz

She was 7lb 0.5oz

Size scans are Bull

MyCatIsTryingToKillMe · 11/02/2017 05:36

I was measuring quite big in my pregnancy and was referred for a scan at 38weeks and was told he was abnormal size and about 7lbs. He was 10lb when born and extremely long, The scans are very hot and miss I think so don't get too stressed about it.

Having said that, I loved having a big baby, the birth was natural (but with pain relief so didn't hurt!) but he was so robust and I never worried about his weight gain!

My midwife referred to my bump as "that giant baby" Shock and referred us for growth scan, this confirmed normal growth with expected birth weight

BadToTheBone · 11/02/2017 06:19

My first dc was 8lb 9oz born a day early by emcs, they told me with two weeks to go that dc2 would be much bigger, I had a few scans leading up to birth to keep a check on her, she was born 11 days late at 8lb exactly. Not accurate in my case either.

I don't think your oh should be worried, big babies are just as gorgeous as little babies and they're no ones "fault"!

Littlelegs19 · 11/02/2017 07:24

In my family, me, DM and DSIS have all been told we were going to have tiny babies and they were worried they weren't growing right. My DM had 4 kids and none under 8lb, DSIS 2 children were also over 8lb and my DS was 4 weeks early and I was told he would be around 4lb. Turned out to be 5lb 9oz. What I'm saying is the growth scans weren't accurate 30 years ago and are clearly still not accurate.
