Gender Neutral Baby Clothes

Hey everyone,

I'm just over 14 weeks now withat first sucessful pregnancy- goes without saying, very excited.

We're coming up to the gender scan in about 4-5 weeks and feel like we're pushed to choose knowing what we are having purely because of one reason. All gender neutral baby clothes are white!

Some white I have no problem with, but I feel like little squishy should be celebrated, and to me (very opinion based i know) white isn't celebratory. I'm looking for bright colours, maybe stripes and spots. I'm not overly stuck on pale pink or blue regardless of squishy's gender, but nowhere that I can see sells bright a bubbly newborn clothing. Has anyone else found this?

I know it's possible I'm looking in the wrong place and would be whole appreciative if someone could point me in the direction of some wonderfully coloured clothes that would suit any gender. I'm a couple of inches away from making a huge mess and dying some white baby grows if I can't find something.

Much love.
Xox

For newborn best thing is white babygrows from John Lewis. Then look online on places like easy for hand knitted cardigans and booties and hats to go with it. Or learn to knit yourself

Shantotto · 08/02/2017 11:47

Oh and I also do wrllbout of Sainsbury's, gap and next, I've bought girls stuff out of gap and next for brights and fun Pokémon patterns!

savagehk · 08/02/2017 11:49

Hence second hand, or buy in sales.
For the proper newborn phase, it depends how sicky your baby is and how well your nappies contain poonamis as to how many clothes you'll need, but I think most people tend to have far more clothes than they need. You may also find other people who already have kids give you a whole lot that their kids have grown out of.
I had a massively drooley baby from around 3 months and we could probably have got away with white tops and coloured bandanna bibs as he always needed a bib on. (see funkygiraffebibs.co.uk/ )

Also this is an idea (don't own any myself though) - www.slugsandsnails.ie/shop/

My first pregnancy I didn't find out. Bought gender neutral clothes.

Two days after DS was born I was in next going crazy for boy clothes.

Second pregnancy I found out I was expecting a DD, spent far too much money while pregnant and over bought. (Remember you get gifts too)

I never wanted to find out with either, but my husband wanted to. So we did one of each.

If I could go back I would have had two surprises. Nothing beats the moment you get handed your baby and told here is your son/daughter. I've actually started blubbing writing that (I'm hormonal).

Remember when you first have a kid you're desperate to show them off! I had a third degree tear that got infected and I still went out buying baby clothes X

Frugi, maxomorra, kite, picalilly, h&m all do gorgeous colourful unisex baby clothes, added benefits are that most are organic and cut so that you get ones of wear from them and have a high resale value so you can splash out and then get most of your money back by selling on. Happy shopping and good luck!

GreedyDuck · 08/02/2017 12:33

Next, a shop I never even considered buying anything in beforehand, actually came up trumps for brightly coloured non frilly baby gros when I had my dd a couple of years ago.

John Lewis also had some nice multipacks of striped or block coloured ones as well.

Mol1628 · 08/02/2017 12:34

Agree namechange30 but I think there are a few more colour options for boys than girls, especially in the newborn sizes.

NameChange30 · 08/02/2017 12:40

I guess I wouldn't think of the neutral/colourful things as being "for boys" specifically but maybe they're labelled that way.

What bothers me is that I love cats and there are no neutral or boys' clothes with cats on Sad All the baby clothes with cats are "girly" because they're pink or frilly or have flowers on them. Boys like cats too Angry

savagehk · 08/02/2017 13:01

Yep namechange, everything I've seen with cats on has been for girls!

BridgetDarcy · 08/02/2017 13:08

I don't know what I'm having but have loads of either way clothes. Very colourful. My absolutely favourites are from Little Green Radicals.

You'll get gifted lots of boy or girl stuff once they are born anyway.

MsLTwinkle · 08/02/2017 13:13

Arh the pirate cat top!! So sweet Grin

That's what I mean, they're labelled for boys but fine for a girl. My boys also have some girls clothes but I find the quality isn't as good, materials are thinner etc.

It's harder as they get older to find colourful boys clothes though.

NameChange30 · 08/02/2017 13:14

Thanks heaven, I did see that in JL the other day... I know I'm being fussy but I'm not a fan, I think it's the eye patch flap - there's too much going on. My theory is that they had to compensate for the "girly" cat with a "boyish" pirate theme Hmm

Artandco · 08/02/2017 13:16

I love the German brand 'disana'. 6months-2 years they lived in disnana wool dungerees. Then the wool leggings once potty trained. They come in loads of colours. My 7 year old was in a green pair yesterday still

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 08/02/2017 13:18

There's loads. Even Mothercare had a bright unisex section (inbetween all the pink and blue areas) as well as the Little Jools stuff.

Agree with scandi brands.

H&M is great, though the sizing can be a bit weird. Even Next have some good unisex stuff (sometimes, they're usually ruled by pink and blue in my local one).

TitusAndromedon · 08/02/2017 13:20

Google the website Babi Pur. They have loads of unisex clothes, sometimes on sale, and they also do a 10% discount with a loyalty code.

savagehk · 08/02/2017 13:23

littlefootprint.co.uk/maxomorra-cat-tee.html ?

(I know there's pink edging...)

plimsolls · 08/02/2017 13:43

There's tons! PP have given details of loads of places so I won't bother repeating but just wanted to add something that was helpful when I was shopping when pregnant and didn't know the sex.
I found with online shopping that any filter or index which specifically says "Newborn" usually gives you a limited selection of the stock and is based on pale pink, pale blue or white/beige.

However, if you click on to the "baby boy" sections and "baby girl sections" you'll find loads of brightly coloured, patterned, etc, outfits sleepsuits vests and all sorts. These are all usually made in newborn sizes too.

It's a really annoying website design thing and made worse by the fact they then insist you access the clothes via Girl or Boy sections. Most baby clothes are unisex so the dinstinction on the website is arbitrary.

Hope that makes sense. Once I figured that out, there were a whole load more shopping options available to me!

Sparklyuggs · 08/02/2017 13:43

I got a gorgeous sleepsuit in JMB which has multicolour elephants on it. It was in the sale and might still be online?

TheLegendOfBeans · 08/02/2017 13:45

Sainsbury's
Boots
John Lewis

Lovely bright baby clothes. Boots in particular have a lovely range of what I'd call "psychedelic sleepsuits".

Placebogirl · 08/02/2017 14:20

Baby boy cat top (18 pounds, mind :S)

Sainsbury's is wonderfully cheap, tops for £1 in the sale etc. Next more expensive but nice. There's generally colourful stuff in the bits section in primark too
