I really want to know.

Does it put you under an obligation that you don't like?

Or do you love it that someone has taken the time and trouble to knit something especially for your baby?

I tend toward this sort of thing if it makes a difference.

Thoughts? I don't want to be giving people stuff they don't want and have suddenly become paranoid.

Well I'd be grateful for someone spending all that time on something for us and our baby BUT it has to be well made.
Someone I don't know very well made a few items for us and I appreciated the thought but they were quite frankly terrible
DS couldn't wear them as sleeves were in the wrong place and they had lots of holes in!

I think the shoes in the link are really beautiful and I would have loved them. A friend of mine has a very talented mum who makes lots of clothes for her DS and they are fantastic, I keep saying she should make to sell

littlerach · 25/02/2007 08:04

I received lots of "matinee jackets" form elderly aunts, and whilst I didn't really like or even use them, I appreciated the thought and the effort immensley.
However, I did receive a couple o freally nice knitted bits and used them a lot.
Like the link that you did, would appreciate those.

sunnywong · 25/02/2007 08:04

I would be worried about washing and drying it tbh. It would be bound to get puke and poo on it. But it is a nice thought.

Maybe you could actually sit the baby whilst doing the time consuming knitting, that would be a double gift then.

belgo · 25/02/2007 08:05

As long as it's well made, I would like it. It's just the same as buying shop bought gifts - there's always a risk that the reciever doesn't share the same taste as you.

If I were to take the time to knit something, I would probably ask first if they would like it.

Filly4LOOP · 25/02/2007 08:12

I don't really knit for others tbh anyway.

But would kind of like to.

hmm. So its ok if its tasteful and well made?

and it would have to be practical. THose shoes in the link are beautiful, but I can't imagine that they stay on very well.

usandnosleep · 25/02/2007 08:16

Yes I think so and just a thought you can't really go wrong with a blanket or special shawl.

Filly4LOOP · 25/02/2007 08:19

ah no, they don't.

made them for dd and had to sew elastic round the opening so they stayed on

they are very much photo shoes.

but practical stuff is boring and you can get realms of it in mothercare.

I was just about to say that, I was given a knitted cardigan, which I never really used, as it was very hard to get on a newborn, her little fingers kept getting caught up in the sleeves...but then my ds was given a blanket, which was beautifully made, and he still uses it now, and he is 3 1/2, I think a blanket or shawl would be a very practical gift, which will hopefully have years of use in it.

ludaloo · 25/02/2007 08:22

oh sorry, x posts!

You can buy practical things, but you could always make a blanket or shawl type thing personal

belgo · 25/02/2007 08:22

Filly - that's the challenge - to make soemthing beautiful and special that's also practical - what about knitted toys?

DimpledThighs · 25/02/2007 08:24

TBH I love them if they are made by people close to me and I cherish the love in the stitches.

If they are from a friend's great aunt or something and I don't know them I do not feel close to them then a brightly coloured shop bought snuggly fleece wins hands down.

colditz · 25/02/2007 08:25

I adore little knitties

I like the more practical stiff, like bobble hats, mittens, and blankets. Never bugger about with jackets and those funny woolley knickers. Cardigans are fine though. I like knitted jumpers for older kids too, like aged 2 and 3.

liath · 25/02/2007 08:25

I got given one hand knitted cardigan - I was really touched that someone had actually sat down and made something for my baby. She wore it quite a lot too. Might have felt differently if I been swamped by knitted stuff but one nice item amongst all the shop bought gifts of varying taste was lovely.

TeetheCeeofDavedom · 25/02/2007 08:27

Those booties you linked to are gorgeous.
DD1 was given a huge selection of hand-knitted cardigans when she was born. I kept every single one and loved them all but she never wore a single one. She was also knitted sweet booties like that which she wore once and a beautiful blanket which I used a lot. Most of the beautiful handknitted stuff I kept and passed onto DD2 and still have it now she's 14 months old.

Filly4LOOP · 25/02/2007 08:29

knitted toys?

always rather tricky

now I like these

but

other people like this sort of thing, allegedly

that clown's just scarey!

I know someone who makes knitted ladybirds and bees etc, and attaches them to a mobile.

Filly4LOOP · 25/02/2007 08:31

oh and I don't think, as a knitter, I am too bothered if the stuff never gets worn.

the important thing is that it is a gift from me to the new baby, something that I have made. I think. Thus far I have always chickened out and gone to Born or somewhere.

I HATE it !!

PeachesMcLean · 25/02/2007 08:33

Hello - I have to say I'm not keen on the shoes. They're a bit traditional for my taste. I Love the first lot of toys though - they're the sort of thing I'd hang on to for years. The second pierrot one looks a bit scary to me! (sorry, you said you wanted honest.)

belgo · 25/02/2007 08:36

I would appreciate knitted scarfs/ hats/ blanket, because thouse are the things I would use.

I wouldn't like knitted gloves because my dc never like wearing gloves.

TheBlonde · 25/02/2007 08:37

Knitted cardies and blankets are good
Prefer cotton though and admit to getting rid of some of the acrylic stuff we were given

NotQuiteCockney · 25/02/2007 08:38

I always give people hats. They're machine-washable on gentle. I've done blankets, too, but those are for good friends etc, as blankets take forever. Some pictures here.
