Injection to help deliver the placenta

Hello all! I'm 35+4 and had my midwife appointment today - she was telling me that I have the choice of getting an injection to help deliver the placenta. Apparently if you do get it the placenta is birthed faster but it can make you feel sick and if you don't it might just take a long time for the placenta to come away.
I just wondered if most people get the injection anyway and if there's anything to take note of before saying yes to it?
Thanks very much :)

I had it, it made me really sick. I wasn't warned that vomiting was a possible side effect.

I've been advised to as I have a fibroid so higher risk of post-partum haemorrhage. I have no objection to it.

I didn't get a choice, just got stabbed in the leg! I had pre-eclampsia so they just had to get the placenta out asap. Didn't have any side effects from it.
Only you can make the decision if you want to have it or not, no one can tell you if it'll definitely make you sick or not.

I must have had the injection first time as it was removed very swiftly after DD1's delivery (forceps, haemorrhage and lots of stitches and I was out of it).

With DD2 I had to wait a good while then push it out. I was holding DD at the time. It wasn't sore or anything, just a bit annoying like "surely my vag has been through enough".

I tell you what nobody asked me about... The painkiller they shoved up my bum after! I had a LOVELY afternoon in the postnatal ward, telling all and sundry how i didn't feel too bad, how brilliant it all felt considering id had a drug free labour etc etc... Until DP got sick of hearing / took pity on the poor midwives and murmured in my ear "you know they shoved some stunning painkillers up your arse when you were being stitched up, don't you!"

Delightful

I had it first time and felt sick and a bit overwhelmed at another thing to deliver after the baby. That time I also had retained products and an infection.

Second time I didn't have the injection and delivered the placenta naturally after 20 minutes of cuddling and feeding Ds. That was much more relaxing so I'd do without the injection if it was otherwise straightforward.

I've just NC'd as had to post!

First DC, small mention of injection immediately, my Aunt (who is a midwife) was there and just nodded at me to do it so I did. No problem at all. No sickness. Perfect looking placenta presented to me in cardboard bowl and congratulated on my text book lovely placenta Grin

Second DC, no one mentioned the injection at all. birth had been quite fast, I completely didn't even think about it. I just sat and waited to deliver placenta, (very short staffed and midwife was split between me and neighbour who had been labouring for ages with first.) Midwife assistant came in to help 'clean me up' and we both looked down to see quite large blood loss etc. She went to get help, New and unseen before midwife came in, took one look at me and in a really spiteful tone of voice said to me 'Ha! Bet you wish you had taken up the offer of the injection now!' I was mortified. First mention of injection to me and as it was 6+ years since previous birth I had completely forgotten about it - I certainly hadn't turned it down. Absolute bitch. I ended up staying in overnight with drip etc. End result all ok.

My recommendation would be to have it. I had no ill effects from it and would have done it again if it had been offered!

Interesting someone upthread mentioned fibroids - have since discovered I have one. Could be connected to event?
