Lying on back while PG

I know as you get further along it's not ok to sleep flat on your back, but does the same apply to lying propped up on cushions (a bit like the position of a tick ✅ shape!) or with a cushion under one side so that the back isn't completely flat?

It's uncomfortable lying on my side all the time! Thank you.

I'd like to know the same thing. Finding I can only fall asleep on back but slightly propped up these days. No bump yetso not worried but wondering how long I can keep doing this.

I think you can safely do it as long as you don't feel dizzy/get back pain.

MissisBee · 06/01/2017 17:23

You're fine if you're propped up/ sideways with a pillow or cushion

If you're going to put a cushion under one side of your back, put it on the right - that's the side the big vein is on that your womb is squishing when you're flat

I had surgery whilst pg and they put a wedge shadow cushion under one side so you are not completely flat. I think you would notice if you feel a bit light headed and move naturally anyway.

Shape!

Meh I'm 36 weeks and have slept on my back at points during the night all the way through, it was either that or not sleep.

AFAIK The advice not to lie on your back comes from studies of women who have had epidurals and have experienced issues as a result of this/low blood pressure. Generally the advice seems to be that it's fine as long as it is comfortable for you and you don't start feeling lightheaded or get pins and needles in your legs.

Depending on your midwife they may recommend lying on your left side when possible as it is the best position for circulation. Most if you ask will also say it's more important to be comfortable and get enough sleep and look after yourself.
