So I was looking into getting one of these for when baby arrives, mentioned it to a few people who have pointed out it was on watchdog a couple of weeks ago as not being that good and not removing the bacteria or something...has anyone got one or is planning on getting one? I was thinking because tommee tippee are a very known make they would've recalled if an issue was there?

I adore mine! Watched the Watchdog programme and decided to change filers earlier then when notified by the machine.

My DC is fed on demand and can go 2-4 hours between feeds on a given day. He would not be amused to wait for kettle to. Oil and water to cool down!

girlelephant · 31/12/2016 15:22

Ps look out for places having them on sale as they are regularly reduced Smile

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/12/2016 15:24

its not better then a kettle, but to make the bottle the safe way, the kettle is meant to have been boiled and left for 30/30m to get to 70*

unless you baby is in a v strict routine and you know excalty when will wake you cant keep reboiling kettle, and def doesnt work for night feeds

best/easiest way is the flask method i said, so water at right temp and literally make the bottle

Sleeplessinmybedroom · 31/12/2016 15:26

Yes I agree don't pay full price. They are regularly reduced to half price during baby events.

rhodes2015 · 31/12/2016 15:27

I have literally just bought one from Mothercare today, reduced to £70.
This will be my first so no experience but I'm the last out of all my friends to have a baby and they have all used it and swear by it so it was the first thing on my list to buy.

snowone · 31/12/2016 15:31

Literally THE BEST bit of kit you could have....made my life soooooooo much easier! It traveled all over the place with us. Best £70 I ever spent! Wink

kel12345 · 31/12/2016 15:32

I never had one as one I didn't like the idea of a machine making the bottle for me, and two I prefer to make them by hand in advance myself. I make the bottles by hand in advance and store in the fridge. I only see the need for a machine to do it for you. Parents made bottles by hand for years before it was invented, why change now? Also I've heard a lot of people have problems with them. Glad I never wanted one.

Superaspie · 31/12/2016 15:45

The filters last ages. DD2 is 6 months and I've only needed to change the filter once so far. I only changed it twice in the year I used it for dd1 if I remember correctly. Only needed descaling once.

EstelleRoberts · 31/12/2016 16:37

My DD won't drink formula that has been prepared more than 20/30 minutes in advance for some reason. I presume the taste changes a bit if left to sit for longer. It could be just a quirk of hers, though, or the fact that it is a milk-free, non-standard formula.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 31/12/2016 16:41

They are on offer today if you sign up to Amazon family but today only. I saw a deal on the playpennies fb page making it about £56 which is the cheapest I've seen them.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/12/2016 17:28

bottles need to be made freshly due to the bacteria in the powder

years ago and taking 25+ as a qualified nanny i used to make up all bottles and store in fridge, cant do that now

Artandco · 31/12/2016 17:32

BLondes - if you add the hot water straight away to bottle it will cool a little so it isn't 100 degrees quicker than if in insulated full kettle. Plus it's no cooler than 70 degrees no aim for 70 degrees, after 20 minutes it will be too cold.

sj257 · 31/12/2016 18:09

Not for me after reading info on first steps nutrition as recommended by the infant feeding team when I did some training with them. Also wouldn't recommend it.

Twinnypops · 31/12/2016 19:34

Best thing I've ever bought!

Blackfellpony · 31/12/2016 19:49

Another one who thinks it's the best bit of baby kit I have!

Notsure1234 · 31/12/2016 22:35

I love it and would definitely recommend it.

I believe it's only a problem with the temp if baby is poorly already. I thought the advice in the rest of Europe was to make with room temp water, it's only the uk who advises over 70.

I work with peadiatric dieticians and a lot of them have said they would use one too.

Laineymc7 · 31/12/2016 22:40

We used one with dd and found it really handy. It's not something you need straight away as the smallest bottle I think it makes is 4/6 ounces I can't remember. It's easier to use the ready made formula at the beginning if you are going to formula feed. I would use it again and lots of my friends use them with no issues.

Mumof2winedrinkerof4 · 02/01/2017 12:59

It just sounds very over priced for a fancy 'kettle'. We always just half filled out bottles with boiled water let then cool and put in the fridge. Then when bubs was ready for a feed topped it up with boiled water and added the feed. Bottle ready instantly. No fuss or waiting to cool.

Becciilouisex3 · 03/01/2017 08:28

I love none. HV said they can't recommend it and have to tell you the disclaimer that "there hasn't been enough research done yet to definitively say that it's safe because it doesn't hear the water completely to boiling point".

Plenty of people use them and in my view, if it was unsafe for making up formula milk (literally it's purpose) it wouldn't be sold. It would have had to pass some safety tests and prove it was fit for purpose before being sold and widely distributed.

Read up and weigh up in your mind. Personally I love it, especially for night feeds. Just be aware that it does tell you to add the milk to the hot water and then add the cold but some baby formula is made up using "to temperature" water so you need to fill the bottle with water before adding the formula. Always read the formula box to check Smile

Bellaposy · 03/01/2017 08:31

Absolute God send. We use MAM bottles which are brilliant but you can't sit in cold water to cool down. Honestly, get one if you're planning to FF. I would recommend it to everyone.

ColourfulOrangex · 03/01/2017 09:18

Think I will definitely get one :) thank you all

Sunshinegirl82 · 03/01/2017 11:27

Mumof2 the guidance now states that the formula must be added directly to hot water (more than 70 degrees) to kill the bacteria in the powder so the method you used would no longer be recommended.

You can still make a bottle using a kettle that complies with the new guidance but you would generally have to make it up fresh with hot water for each feed and then wait for it to cool/cool it with the tap. The machine cuts out the waiting!

BobbieDog · 03/01/2017 11:35

How do you clean them?

I assumed you would just change the filters?

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2017 17:34

there is a descale button, and yes change filters,i would empty water out each week and add fresh, or make sure drain tank regularly, rather then keep adding top ups of water

Glitteryunicorn · 03/01/2017 17:45

We have one I wouldn't be without it, one of our best buys.

Personally I thought the watchdog piece was scaremongering and really irresponsible on their part.

Look at it this way do you think tommee tippee would sell something dangerous designed for babies given what would happen if something happened to a baby?their business would be ruined I suspect the research is sound but not published as it would compromise something commercially sensitive.
