Nausea - does anything help?!

I am 7 weeks with DC2 and feeling absolutely AWFUL. I don't remember it being this bad last time but maybe that's because I have DC1 to take care of now too so I have less time to rest etc...

Nausea is relentless and awful. I am not currently vomiting, just feel on the verge of it all day, every day, even when I get up at night for the loo.

I have tried everything that worked in my last pregnancy and nothing is helping. The thought of having another 7 or 8 weeks of this is so depressing.

Do you actually need to be vomiting to get any meds from the doctor to help? I am barely able to function most of the time and feel it is so unfair to DC1...

waits for someone to suggest ginger

in my experience (three kids and just hitting MS with #4) nothing works. I've tried seabands, crackers, fizzy water and everything in between and the only thing which has ever helped has been getting to second tri.

Go to the GP and get some drugs.

doyouhearthesteepleping · 26/12/2016 21:21

I sniffed strong minty mouthwash. Same as you - I was on the verge of vomiting all the time.

hopsalong · 26/12/2016 21:26

Nothing worked for me. Started cyclizine in second trimester when truly fed up and took edge off, but made me feel groggy and crap. Could have written your post three months ago. Also have struggled terribly with guilt about neglecting DC1.

We need more research! So many women I know have had terrible NVP in second or subsequent pregnancies after mild/no morning sickness first time round.

Think it is especially hard at Xmas because so many delicious things around to eat (not when you're feeling sick all the time!), and general pressure to be festive. Once everyone is on dry January and dieting it will be easier, I hope, OP? I was so depressed when I got to 13 weeks and was feeling worse than ever (and throwing up multiple times a day instead of just 1-2). But from 16 weeks it did start easing. In the meantime, sympathies!

Largemelons · 26/12/2016 21:32

Feeling exactly the same. 8 weeks tomorrow with number 6 and I have to say I've never had it like this before! I usually get a bit over sensitive to smells, go off certain things and suffer minor nausea but this is full on and has been since 5 weeks.
Like you, no vomiting although I came very close today.
I think I'm going to have to visit the docs as I feel so crap it's like I'm neglecting my lovely DC although I'm lucky DH has 3 weeks off over Christmas.

DomesticAnarchist · 26/12/2016 21:52

I felt awful with DC1 and so did as much reading about pregnancy nausea for DC2.

I can't remember the details, but:

Ginger does have a similar effect to Vitamin B6 (which is, apparently, one of the things GPs prescribe before the heavy stuff), statistically significantly greater an effect than a placebo, but you have to consume the equivalent of 2g per day. You won't get enough with ginger biscuits or tea, but some of the pregnancy vitamins contain the equivalent of active ingredient. (I took the Boots ones).

I also took them last thing at night, which might have helped.

I read as much research as I could and paid particular attention to the Cochrane Review on pregnancy sickness. There's a huge lack of good research in the area, unfortunately.

If that doesn't take the edge off, see a doctor for proper medication.

Hope you feel better soon, OP. 💐

DomesticAnarchist · 26/12/2016 21:55

Oh, and as you've noted, rest is so important. Palm everything off to DP, and go to bed when DC1 does. If you're lucky, this'll get you through the worst bit and you'll be feeling better in a couple of weeks.

Seriously, rest. Properly, & often.

knorrig · 26/12/2016 21:57

Sea bands were a godsend for me...I was puking all day and couldn't even keep down water but improved dramatically when I got them!

Doodles15 · 26/12/2016 21:58

Ginger is apparently a natural reliever of nausea. I lived in gingerbread men that I made with my toddler for quite a few weeks of this pregnancy. They were the only thing I could stomach....

littledinaco · 26/12/2016 22:01

You can get a prescription for avomine (it has another name too but I can't remember). It's a travel sickness drug but does work for nausea. It can make you drowsy though so best to take at night before bed.

You're best to check the risk of taking in pregnancy. I had HG and took this with other medications (this worked at stopping the nausea-I had to double the dose though on advice of specialist consultant) but I think the risk of HG complications was worth the risk of the medication if that makes sense!

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2016 22:02

Pregnancy Sickness Support This website and the charity behind them are very helpful.

Rest, hydrate as much as you can. I used to let ice cubes melt in my mouth.
See your GP, they can prescribe anti-sickness medication.

soontobeamum1982 · 26/12/2016 22:05

They don't work for everyone, but i'm wearing seabands 24/7 (only take them off to have a shower) and it does take the edge off it - as long as i don't get hungry. Reduces the 'oh my god i'm going to vom' feeling to general 'ugh, i've got a bad hangover'.

goose1964 · 26/12/2016 22:08

DD had awful morning sickness , think 24/7 this pregnancy, she swore by pepsi and ginger beer

Coldhandscoldheart · 26/12/2016 22:10

I have been given medication for nausea this time round. I have older child & ft busy job and simply can't cope with the nausea on top of all the bugs brought home from nursery.
I'm not needing to take a full dose, just enough to cope.
Rest does make a massive difference I've realised & I do wonder if that's what's different this time round as I sailed through the first time.
Worth speaking to the GP, although investigate all alternatives too.

oldlaundbooth · 26/12/2016 22:10

No vomiting for me but felt like a 24/7 hangover for around six weeks.

Toast, cheese, pasta, potatoes, smoothies, yogourt helped me. That and sweet citrus juicies like orange, pineapple etc.

Lunalovepud · 26/12/2016 22:21

Thanks all, I had forgotten about the Sea Bands so I have just ordered some (thank goodness for Amazon Prime!) and hopefully they will take the edge off a bit...

I have tried ginger beer, flat coke, lemon and ginger etc and although they helped in my first pregnancy, they don't seem to help at all this time... I'll give them another whirl when I get the sea bands and see if the combo helps.

Today I have mostly been eating breadsticks, cream crackers and bread / toast... I have just remembered ice lollies actually - I need to get in a supply of ice lollies! They helped last time...

So much for a healthy diet in the first trimester, eh! Wink

If I am still feeling this shit in a week when DH is back to work and I have DC on my own in the daytime then I am off to the doctor to get some drugs.

Thanks again everyone. I feel better just for talking about it!

You need a lot more ginger than that to have an effect. Honestly, try the boots vits with the ginger extract in them (or any others with ginger extract), they have a much greater chance of being effective than the other recommendations.

Bumbleclat · 27/12/2016 06:35

Promethazine tablets prescribed by Dr
Getting to 20 weeks
San Peli lemonade

Doodles15 · 27/12/2016 08:11

Also, with both pregnancies now really strong flavours helped. My othergo to was salt and vinegar mccoys! Im now 17 weeksandmy diet is still pretty ropey so I wouldn't worry! With already having one do whatever you can to get through the day 😀

Lunalovepud · 27/12/2016 22:00

Right - tomorrow I am going to my local sushi place to ask them for some pickled ginger - I love that stuff anyway and it's a bonus if it stops me feeling sick.

A family member tried to shame me for thinking about going to the doctor today... Told DH not to 'let' me take any drugs. Thanks for the support love - makes me feel 100 times better knowing you have my back. Wink

Lunalovepud · 27/12/2016 22:01

DH told her to bugger off of course...

Overthehillandroundthebend · 27/12/2016 22:09

I used to make myself a warm ginger tea - boiled fresh ginger, a couple cloves, cardoman pods to make a weak tea. It really helped me.

coxsorangepippin · 28/12/2016 18:58

The dr gave me Phenergan (an over the counter antihistamine used for travel sickness) which is possibly the most life improving medicine I've ever taken! Was prescribed up to 3 a day but 1 is enough.

Coldhandscoldheart · 29/12/2016 20:10

Glad he has your back, whoever said it's like a permanent hangover has it. Also eating non stop helps (which is also something I can't do at work). I've had a week living on potato waffles (those babies go right in the toaster) and apple juice.
