bump: kicks = clicks?!

Hello
For the last few days, Bump's sturdiest kicks have been producing audible 'clicking' noises from my tummy, a bit like the noise you can make with your tongue on the roof of your mouth. They are loud enough for my husband and colleagues to hear them! Has anyone else had this / can anyone explain this? I hope it's nothing to worry about.

Ooh, that sounds interesting, haven't heard of that before. How far gone are you? Do you tend to have clicky joints or anything?

Gumdrop · 23/06/2004 17:04

I'm not a health professional, but FWIW unless these clicks / kicks are accompanied by discomfort to you, I wouldn't worry too much. I would be tempted to mention it to your midwide next time you see her though.

I had little pains from the area of my fallopian tubes both times I was pregnant, and got myself into a real state imagining miscarriages etc - just because such pains weren't mentioned in my baby books, or the appalling sacharine parenting magazines ! Now have 2 x dd's fit and healthy.

Hi Bigmerlin,
I had this too, very odd. After a while I realised it must be my joints as I suffered from mild SPD.
It is disconcerting but I don't think its anything to worry about.
When can you next see your midwife?

Bigmerlin · 23/06/2004 18:00

Hello
I'm 33 weeks. The clicks do sound like they actually come from my tummy, although I suppose they might be coming from my joints, they do sound a bit like tiny versions of the 'squelchy click' I sometimes get from my knee.
I'm not that worried, at first I just thought it was quite funny!

I'm seeing my midwife in 2 weeks, so will ask her.

could it be that your bruiser is kicking hard enough to cause a wee movement of gas within your bowel?

Recently, I've been kicked hard enough that pains shoot off down the inside of my thighs and up my fallopian tubes - it makes me double over but at the same time I can't stop laughing It's so bizarre that such a tiny foetus, encased in loads of fluid and a strong uterine wall can kick that hard!

Hello
Finally got an answer re the clicks! Neither of the midwives knew what they were. Yesterday I had to see a consultant at hospital, as baby is still breech at 36 weeks. He knew straight away, it is surface tension of water as the baby kicks and then pulls away. This is why it sounds the same as clicking with your tongue on the roof of your mouth. It's probably so audible with me because I have a low level of amniotic fluid.
So there you go!

Glad it was ok BM. I had a click kick at the weekend (am 27weeks) and remembered this thread! I haven't had one since though. Is low A/fluid levels anything to be concerned about?

Hope you are well

That's so mad and very interesting!
Enjoy your preganancy

I had this with dd2 - she turned out to have 'clicky' ankles once born.

Bigmerlin · 22/07/2004 11:10

Beansprout - sorry not to have replied earlier, computer wasn't working.
Re low fluid levels. I have lower than average fluid, but not off the bottom of the scale, so it's nothing to worry about. There is a condition where women have really low fluid, which is more serious, but quite rare apparently.
In my case, the side effect of having low fluid is that my baby is still breech at 38 weeks, because she hasn't got enough space to move, and therefore I have to have a C-section. So if you are ever told you have low fluid AND that baby is breech, make sure they get things moving to turn baby asap. Otherwise as she grows it will be less and less likely that she turns. I was left another 2 weeks, because they didn't take the low fluid into consideration, and by the time I was referred for an ECV [to turn her], it was far too late to even try.

I had this exact same clicking in my last pregnancy and my midwife also didn't know what it was. My little girl is now 16 months and doesn't have any clicky limb or joint problems.
I am now 32 weeks pregnant and the same thing has been happening for a few weeks now. The noise comes from the top of my tummy on my right hand side. They are quite loud, a sort of click that come as the baby is doing a limb movement rather than a big shift of her body. They really are quite loud and if the room is quiet others can hear it easily. It happens very often sometime 3 or 4 times in an hour. I just thought it was strange that it's not that common but I've had it twice in a row.
I did post here about it during my last pregnancy but there really wasn't much response.
Oh my goodness. I've just had another one as I'm typing. I can sort of tell when it's about to happen as it comes at the end of her biggest kicks.
Anyone else had them and had any more explanations?
