The title says it all really. I really struggle with not drinking when pregnant. Anyway, after much research I have come up with a list of just about ok drinks, but I am interested to hear if others can add to my list. Just to be clear, I'm after drinks that do at least resemble alcohol. I know I should just abstain, but hey!
So suggestions please ? I'm particularly interested to hear if anyone has found a nice low alcohol or alcohol free cider.
Here's my list:
Jupiler 0.5% (Belgian beer - still a bit on the sweet side but not too bad)
Norfolk punch (sort of fake mulled wine)
Mulled wine boiled with no lid (on the basis that most of the alcohol evaporates?!)
Thanks

Have you tried schloer?

TinyGang · 18/02/2007 09:27

Cobra Lite is quite good, but it wasn't around when I was pregnant. I don't mind it now and again now out of choice so that's a good sign it's not toooo bad.

It can be hard I know. I used to drink Kaliber(sp?) when I was pregnant and it was 'orrible! I haven't touched it since.

Towards the end I promised myself a feast of all the goodies I'd been deprived - I used to long for soft cheeses and peanuts. Every year something else seems to get added to the list of stuff you can't have.

TrinityRhino · 18/02/2007 09:28

dd3 is only 11 days old and I've already eaten my weight in danish blue and pate

TinyGang · 18/02/2007 09:32

I don't blame you Trinity (many congrats btw on your new little babe - hope it's going well)

My parents are quite keen on cheeses to nibble after dinner and I used to sit and whimper with longing when we visited.

ruthydd · 18/02/2007 09:41

Yes Miaou, I think Schloer is the best pretend wine, but its still very sweet. I like white wine to be bone dry.

Cobra Lite is a new one on me. I'll try and hunt it down - thanks!

I agree Kaliber is bad. I still have a can in the cupboard from pregnancy 1 (5 years ago).

thanks tiny, we are both doing fine, feeding well and we have finally named her Erin

Gingerbear · 18/02/2007 09:43

Becks Alcohol free lager is very nice, not sweet at all.
Elderflower cordial and San Pelligrino water (posh mineral water)
Ame Rose and white

TinyGang · 18/02/2007 09:49

What upsets me about alcohol free lagers is that they're so expensive - so not only do you feel deprived , but you've still got to stump up the same as ones with alcohol in them. Something about the way they're made I suppose...but still worth a harrumph!

ruthydd · 18/02/2007 09:50

tinygang - presume you mean Cobra 0% rather than Cobra Lite ? I've just looked it up and it says "It is full-flavoured and well-rounded with a hint of sweetness on the tongue". Why are all non-alcoholic drinks sweet ? Is there a link between sugar and lack of alcohol ?

Jupiler 0.5% is 75p for 25cl. A bargain compared to J2f*ing0. I buy it from here although I don't pay postage because I often pass the shop.

Gingerbear - How could I forget Becks? Now this sounds hopeful.

Sorry, Trinity - many congratulations! So wrapped up in my alcoholism .

TinyGang · 18/02/2007 10:07

Yes sorry ruthydd - just checked (we've got some here) It's 'Cobra alcohol free premium lager beer 0.0%' Getting mixed up there.

It's not too sweet; to my taste that is - I guess everyone's a bit different. I find things like Schloer too sweet for me if that's a guide-line.

I quite like it because it doesn't have that chemical bitter cold-tea after taste that Kaliber has

I'm not usually a regular drinker of lagers though, so don't have any favourite ones.

I'm more into red wines, but I've never found an alcohol free wine that was any good. I only got into the Cobra 0% on an 'I'm giving my liver a rest' phase which was an embarassingly short one as it turned out.

The only thing that has ever stopped me drinking regularly was being pregnant and that seems a drastic long term solution.

DetentionGrrrl · 18/02/2007 10:08

i've been drinking alcohol free Becks which is rubbish because 1. i don't like lager 2. it's given me a tummy ache.

Morrisons / Asda have a good range of booze free wine. Shloer is ok, but very sweet. Sainsburys have a booze free white wine, which i haven't tried yet.

colditz · 18/02/2007 10:12

Tesco Value lager is only 2% and makes a half decent shandy.

colditz · 18/02/2007 10:14

The link between sugar and alcohol is that as alcohol is fermented in a drink, the sugar is used up in the process. So non or low alcohol drinks are higher in sugar, as it hasn't been used.

pendulum · 18/02/2007 11:03

Waitrose do a good low- alc cider, can't remember the name but will look it out next time I go.

makemineaginandtonic · 18/02/2007 11:34

Feel slightly odd posting such a long one about alcohol on Sunday morning, but... If you are into mixed drinks, you could probably get away with a few martini and tonics. Martini Bianco (vermouth) is only 15% (as opposed to say gin, which is 40%) and by the time you have diluted it with ice, tonic water, slice of lemon it really must not have much alcohol at all!! A bit like a really really diluted white wine spritzer, but tastes like a proper drink!!

I also really rate lemon, lime and bitters. Pint glass with a measure of lime cordial in the bottom, few drops of angustura bitters and top up with lemonade. Really nice taste which isn't like pretend alcohol or a soft drink.

I am 38+4 and already looking forward to my first glass of freezer cold chardonnay......mmmmmmmmmm or a gin and tonic of course!

ruthydd · 18/02/2007 12:50

Since when was 11:34 on a Sunday morning too early too be thinking about G&Ts ?

Now if anyone can find me some low-alcohol gin I'll be impressed !

I'm so jealous. low alco beer in the middle east tastes like its been brewed from camel droppings with added 'flavouring' from one of those fruit scent air freshners. you'd think a whole nation that was dry would have viable alternatives but no.

and to make matters worse I'm in Germany this week and everywhere I look there are people drinking cool steins of lovely german beer. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH

Katy44 · 18/02/2007 14:17

The A/F sparkling white wine from sainsbury's tastes like elderflower cordial and is VERY sweet.
I chilled it until it was almost frozen which helped a bit, but I wouldn't buy it again.
I tend to have a shot glass of red wine when DH is having some - on occasions I have a small 'real' glass.

MrsFish · 19/02/2007 09:17

I have just been to london for the weekend with dh and friends, I am 8 wks pregnant and enjoy my wine on occasion. Did feel left out whilst the other three were quaffing wine, champers and cocktails. I will admit now that I did have about 4 glasses of champers over the weekend (shame on me) but I drank alot of soft drinks in between... getting to the point. THe one tipple I did have where I felt I was drinking was Virgin Marys, it was great because you can never really taste the vodka in bloody marys' so I fooled myself into thinking I was drinking. Only good if you like tomato juice though, but its great, low calorie and good for you too

atalantis · 19/02/2007 10:00

I'm allowing myself one glass of really lovely red wine every Saturday night. I look forward to it all day Saturday! And because I'm not drinking the rest of the time, I can afford to have something more expensive than I would usually. DH is delighted, because he gets to have the other five glasses...

snowleopard · 19/02/2007 10:03

I had gallons of alcohol-free Becks while pg - it was the best I could find and I kind of got a taste for it eventually and forgot what real lager tastes like. As a bonus, having my first proper, ice-cold full-strength lager after the birth was bloody fantastic - like "Oooooooh, that's what lager's meant to be like!!!"
