Back to back baby at 34 weeks

I'm looking for a bit of advice please. My midwife told me the baby is back to back - 34 wks. She's advised me to lay on my side if I really want to relax or to sit on birthing ball but not to slouch on the sofa. I've done a bit of reading and have started doing a half hour stint on all fours (supported by the ball) and then just sitting on sofa or ball without slouching.
So a couple of questions, if anyone can help.

Is that enough to turn the baby?
Will I be able to tell when it's turned?
Is labour really awful with a back to back baby - will I still be able to have a water birth?
Thanks

Both mine were back to back. The pain during labour was very much in my back but don't know if it was worse than usual labour pain.
I had half a water birth with first but the soothing properties of the water slowed my contractions so ended up having her on the bed. That is probably nothing to do with back to back baby though and just my body and its reactions.
It was all fine with both.

The first took a while to push out but that was more to do with her head size (enormous, 98th percentile) although back to back makes it not so easy.
Second, no probs but another big head (don't have babies with someone with a big head).
I was told that mine were back to back due to too much slouching on sofa and to sit up more.

Baby has plenty of time to change position still. My dc5 was back to back for labour and I wouldn't say the pain was worse than previous labours but it was very different in that the contractions were very much focussed in the middle of my lower back. I don't know how it affects your chances of water birth but I had a lot of intervention from doc during delivery trying to get him to turn which wouldn't have worked with a water birth but don't know if there was another way this could have been handled.

I'm not sure If you'll be able to tell yourself if baby turns, my dc4 was breech and I didn't notice when he flipped to head down but I noticed when he flipped back!!!

My DD was back to back- 10 weeks ago. I tried bouncing on exercise ball but she would not move. I had a water birth- no-one even mentioned that back to back would prevent me having one but as previous pp have said the contraction pain was in my lower back and I spent most of the time on all fours in the water. I only used gas & air and she turned as she crowned.
Good luck

My baby was b2b and turned in labour

AgainReally · 11/12/2016 22:18

Mine turned just before the pushing stage.

DS1 was B2B from 40 wks (due to slouching). No one really told me that it would be hard to deliver a B2B baby so I just went with it. Was in pool for hours with no issues and get to get out to push as I was so relaxed my contractions had slowed right down. It was tough then as I was so tired I couldn't go on all fours so had to deliver lying on my back which is probably the worst. But did it ok in the end.

Thanks for your responses. I'd started to read about some terrible experiences but yours give me some reassurance, thank you for sharing x

Has anyone out there managed to get their back to back baby to turn?

2 of mine was back to back, my second dc was the first back to back one. Labour was very long and I found it extremely painful compared to my first induced baby; pushing stage was almost 2 hours. My third baby was in normal position and much easier. So when i went into labour with ds4 at 34 weeks and a quick scan confirmed he was back to back I was like ohhh nooo. But actually it was fine and not like my ds2s labour and birth. Pushing was about 8 mins and pain was fine managed with just tens.

My little girl went back to back on the day I went into labour I was still able to have a water birth.. she was my first and I went through the whole thing with no pain relief.. eventually she was delivered by forceps only because she was trapped by her cord and she needed to come out quickly so yes it was painful but I did it with no relief.. this is a person who fainted when she had her belly button peirced !! Best advice is stay calm and relaxed baby might turn and if not you just have to go with it!! Good luck either way x Flowers

I had a back to back baby who turned - I read somewhere that breaststroke was good so I spent hours in the pool in the last few weeks... ended up being a very speedy labour...

passingthrough1 · 12/12/2016 09:59

Mine was back to back. Pain on spine was very intense but doable and it wasn't the worst thing (water helped, e.g hot shower on back). It wasn't even really mentioned by the midwives, if just seemed that that's the way he was coming and that was that.

Swimming sounds a good idea, will try that when the mat leave starts. Might have ignored you if you'd said front crawl rather than breaststroke though Grin

Most b2b babies turn in labour, the contractions turn them around.

museumum · 12/12/2016 16:10

My ds was b2b when labour started. I had a whole night of contractions without dilation as he turned. I won't lie, it was horrible.
But!!!
After that my labour was quick and easy. 8cm when I got to mlu then born in four hours in the pool with no real "pushing".
