3rd birth with epideral but natural before

My first labour was long but positive water birth.
My second birth to a very large baby was very scary, baby got stuck, my stomach muscles got ripped and I was left with prolapse. I think my DH got a bit of depression after that, he said that he never saw a human screaming that way before. Our relationship deffinetly was affected afterwards and it took a long time to get back on the same page. This time around I want to avoid all that and go with epideral if there is time. But everyone keeps telling me that there are so many risks associated with that I am begining to feel guilty but I am scared to have same experience with unhumanly screaming.
Anyone had natural births and then went with epideral? How did it go?

Both my labours were with epidurals. I haven't anything to compare them to, however I was induced both times and both babies were over 10lb and the first one was particularly difficult. Cruelly they let the epidural wear off for the pushing stage in that labour. I was traumatised from that second time, however they didn't let it wear off that time and it was a much more pleasant and easier labour. I have recently had an appointment with an anaesthetist who said what happened first time doesn't tend to happen any more (it was 10 years ago), he said it's an outdated view that being in pain and able to feel when to push is beneficial. I did say to him I'd like to try without an epidural this time, he said "why?!".

I presume because of your difficult labour last time you have been consultant led this time? Have you spoken to anyone about it? I think in your situation I'd want one too x

My last 2 were over 10lb, and the last birth has totally put me off going natural ever again, so have requested an Epidural for my induction on 9th jan. I'd rather be calm and feeling more in control than feeling like I'm being ripped in 2 ever again. Plus my partner hated seeing me in so much pain to, he's pleased i'm going with that choice.
It's your birth to go through so do what you feel is right. 👍

I was induced last time and had an epidural as baby was back to back and in the end it was found out my picticion was too high.

If I need to be induced again this time I will be asking for an epidural much earlier.

I wouldn't worry about what other people think. I was pretty sure I wouldn't want one but in the end I was like a different woman my husband said and he's actually still a bit traumatised from that birth!

Is it medical professionals telling you about risks? I'm shocked they'd do that if so. It's an excellent form of pain relief. Don't feel guilty it's completely understandable and normal!

I had two water births, but expecting twins this week(!) and probably having an epidural.

So watching.

Iv had epidurals and tbey are amazing! The pain is gone and you can relax and if the worst happens and you need an EC then you are ready. Or in my case if your placenta is stuck and needs peeled off your womb then you are good to go lol. There are risks and it does limit you to staying on the bed

I'm expecting my third in March and I plan to have an epidural. With my first I didn't intend to have an epidural but labour came on so fast and I was constantly vomiting - I knew I wanted the pain to go away! With my second I was adamant I was going to have an epidural but labour felt far more manageable for some reason, it wasn't so intense, so I just had gas and air. My daughter was almost 10lb! With this baby I just feel that I don't want the sheer exhaustion of coping with all that pain. I have a 3 yr old and 5 yr old at home who need my energy too! As long as this baby arrives safely, I just want it as pain free as possible. Go with whatever you want to. X

Where are you getting your information from? There are very few risks associated with epidural use. Your previous experience sounds horrendous. You do not need to experience severe pain - in fact I think it's inhumane to leave women in pain like that. You don't need anyone's permission to choose a safe effective form of pain relief. And whst is there to feel guilty about? You matter, your pain matters.

I had an epidural and it was the best decision I made. As far as I'm aware there have been no adverse affects to either myself or my beautiful DS (8 months old now!). I had heard that I would need a catheter, that there would be nerve damage to my spine etc but honestly nothing of the sort happened (think I had a temporary catheter while in labour) and would recommend to anyone considering it as a very effective form of pain relief.

I've had one natural birth and one epidural birth. The epidural was bliss I'm kicking myself for not going for it sooner Grin. Giving birth is a risky business, imho there's no point suffering if there's no need.

originalusernamefail · 12/12/2016 17:06

I don't need a catheter and was on my feet walking (supported by DH and drip stand) within 30 minutes of delivering.

Whatsername17 · 12/12/2016 17:50

Have an epidural and love it. I had a low dose and was up and showering fairly quickly as soon as dd have finished feeding. It was so calm and lovely.
