Positive test! Now freaking out that it might be wrong

How common are false positive tests? My period is a week late, I took two cheapo tests two days ago which were negative and now have taken a clear blue test which has come up as positive. Terrified that it is a mistake :( can anyone help?

It won't be a mistake. The only way a pregnancy test can turn positive is if there is HCG present.

Which type of clearblue was it? If its the digital then that's conclusive. If its the one with the blue lines, as long as the test line is blue in colour then that is also conclusive.

The only 'false positive' tests that occur are when its not actually a positive test line but an evaporation line showing (which looks very faint, grey and shadowy).

Congratulations Smile

Aw congratulations, your defo pregnant. :-) The clear blue are the best, the others were prob just taken too early. With the fact that your 2 weeks late its safe to say your expecting. x

PollyCazaletWannabe · 07/12/2016 10:48

OMG!! Are you sure? I'm actually pregnant?! Shock

PollyCazaletWannabe · 07/12/2016 10:50

It was a digital one and said 1-2 weeks, but my Ovia app says I am four weeks based in the date of my last period. Sorry to be so clueless but I guess I just want to be sure

If you want to be absolutely sure, then buy a Clearblue digital and do that (unless that's the test you already used). If it says 'pregnant' there'll be no denying it!

INeedNewShoes · 07/12/2016 10:51

Well, there you go. You are pregnant!

Don't worry about the Ovia app. It doesn't actually know when you ovulated and the ClearBlue digitals often date a week or so behind so the fact the dates don't perfectly tally is fairly irrelevant.

PollyCazaletWannabe · 07/12/2016 10:53

So am I right in thinking that pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period? Or is it from the actual date of conception?
Can you tell that DH and I were not exactly clued up before we started TTC? Grin

I had this, I was 8days late and had only got cheapie tests in and they just didn't pick anything up for me, I did a clearblue digital and it came up pregnant 1-2weeks. I've got my 12 week scan later today 😬
It won't be wrong Grin congratulations x

rhodes2015 · 07/12/2016 10:55

That's correct polly, it's counted from 1st day of last period. I couldn't get my head round it either!

PollyCazaletWannabe · 07/12/2016 10:56

Wow. Tbh I can't believe it. I only came off the pill in September and I'm 37. Never thought in a million years it would happen so quickly!

The midwife/GP will date your pregnancy from the 1st day of your last period but then when your have your dating scan (around 12 weeks) they will adjust your due date according to the baby's measurements.

So it sounds like going from you last period you might initially have a due date that is a week earlier than your actual due date (which will be established at the scan).

PollyCazaletWannabe · 07/12/2016 10:57

Thanks Rhodes! So how soon after your positive test did you go to the doctor?

PollyCazaletWannabe · 07/12/2016 10:58

Thank you INeed, that makes sense

I would go straight away so they can get the ball rolling. I found out about 3 weeks ago and my doctor was very helpful. You need to take folic acid etc so useful to speak to them right away so they can clue you up on what to do next/what to expect. Congratulations!

rhodes2015 · 07/12/2016 11:40

id ring straight away polly. Midwife might not see you for a few weeks yet but I'd get it booked in. I saw mine at what I thought was 8weeks, but midwife made me 10weeks.

FlipperSkipper · 07/12/2016 11:42

Clearblue digitalis date from date of ovulation, whereas pregnancy is actually dated from your last period, then scan. 1-2 weeks on a digi is actually 3-4 weeks pregnant.

INeedNewShoes · 07/12/2016 12:08

Oh yes. Flipper is quite right. I'd completely forgotten that the CB Digital test doesn't date from your last period. Which means the test and Ovia do tally.

phoebe2016 · 07/12/2016 13:05

The clear blue digitals dates the time of conception, so if it says 1-2 then you need to add 2 weeks on and you are actually classed as 3-4 weeks pregnant. Congratulations!

raviolidreaming · 07/12/2016 13:11

Congratulations! You probably won't need to see the GP - most places seem to be self-referral to the midwives so check with the receptionist when you phone.

Andbabymakesthree · 07/12/2016 13:11

Congratulations. Ring GP surgery and ask how you get booked in with midwives :-)

Thanks all. My problem is that I live in China, so everything isn't quite as straightforward. Luckily I have a friend here who is three months pregnant, so she will help me.
So do you think I definitely don't need to get the pregnancy confirmed then?

OP posts:
Cuppaqueen · 07/12/2016 15:32

Hey Polly - congrats on your pregnancy! Just to say I live in China too and in my case the clinic I went to wanted to do a blood test to confirm so you may be the same. Do you have health insurance?

PollyCazaletWannabe · 07/12/2016 16:00

Hi Cuppa! Amazing to find a fellow China MNer! I do have health insurance yes :)

So do you think I need to book in soon? I am going back to England for Christmas and was going to wait until I get back - will this be too late?
