This is supposed to be light hearted and I realise I am very pregnant and exceedingly grumpy - but if one more health professional refers to someone else 'delivering' my baby I am going to snap! I've had a couple already and I most certainly delivered them myself! No real midwife involvement with either- and even if there had been- I would still consider that I had been the one doing the delivering! And while we're at it- what kind of archaic term is confinement???!!! Forms are full of it!! In my mind it goes along with the idea of women being unclean after childbirth- an idea I thought we'd gotten rid of at least a few decades ago in this country. Maybe they are silly things to get hot under the collar about - but can't help thinking they are indicative of the way childbirth is still considered by many- as a passive activity on the woman's part. There- I feel better now . . .

Here here! If a midwife wants to take my pain and exhaustion then and only then can she have the credit! Also I refuse to be confined!!!! This one really annoys me, I will (hopefully) be out and about and rebelling against any said confinement ASAP!!

Glad it's not just me Wink

Agree completely! Ditch the word delivery, babies are born not delivered by the post service ffs

I was watch OBEM (awful show) and one mw told the woman "I'll be getting your baby out for you" WTF??!!

It's just a turn a phrase, and no midwife on earth thinks they work harder than the labouring mother. That said, the phrase 'failure to progress' was like a little stab to my heart when my DD had to be delivered by c/s, so I do understand that these things can be annoying.

Words are important crispyturtle

FadedRed · 06/12/2016 16:46

Confinement YY it's way past time that word went into history, unless you are planning to lock yourself into a darkened room for a couple of months before your due date! Grin Tempting thought though, providing you can take chocolate and a few box sets.
Also, to be accurate, it is the mother who ' is delivered of the baby', not the baby who is delivered.

Donatellalymanmoss · 06/12/2016 16:50

This annoys me too.

Provide support to the mother during labour and birth, giving medical assistant when necessary would be more appropriate, although it's a bit of a mouthful!

Hopefully your dp won't talk about 'when we gave birth' like mine did! AngryGrin

Some words are important, some aren't worth getting worked up about.

I have posted about this before but the language of midwifery is not empowering I have been given the abortion pill to get rid of retained products after a miscarriage. I have been told I have not given birth after a 50 hour labour ended in a EMCS after I failed to progress.
