Feeling really sick, worried about calling in sick

Hello,
I am new, nearly 8 weeks pregant and since week 6 I have been suffering from extreme nausea, though not actually being sick. I am also so tired and napping a lot during the day. I was recently assaulted on a train and then a friend of mine died so I has been signed off work anyway. I went back for 2 days last week but I have had to call in sick again today. I am just constantly retching and not able to eat or drink anything. I am really worried that work will fire me of I cant make it in. It is my first pregnancy after struggling to concieve and I feel a bit lost Sad Any advice greatfully recieved.

It's illegal for your employer to fire you over a pregnancy related absence. As long as you follow their policy for calling in sick you will be fine. I was off work with sickness for pretty much the first trimester. I would check your companies policy on wages though as they may only cover a certain amount of time on company sick pay.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Smile

Go to the gp they will be able to give you anti neusea medicine which may help. They can also give you a sick note it you are off for pregnancy related reasons it can't be counted on your sick record but you will have to tell work.

Constant neusea is totally debilitating! I had it along with vomitting up to 10 a day day from 3-9 weeks this pregnancy it then eased off from 9-13 weeks. There is no way I could have functioned at work instead I had to look after a 4 and 2 year old so they ended up watching a lot of tv!

Thank you StawberryShortcake32. Sure it's just the hormones but I am sat here crying my eyes out. I feel so worried and so ill at the same time. I dont know whether I should just force mself to go in. I cant see how I can cope with feeling like this for another month or so..

Thanks for your advice Mcbaby. I am new to my area, just registered with a gp last week. No appointment until next week. I did ring this morning and they said I could go to a pregnancy unit at my local hospital. I dont know if I should do that? I dont want waste their time if its just morning sickness. I would love some anti sickness medicine so I could function again though

I would go to your GP- I had what you had too op. You have my sympathies. Flowers

Around the 6-10 week mark I felt revolting; particularly with my first pregnancy.

I know you don't want to, but please do try and nibble/ suck something. A ginger biscuit or a mint? Sometimes when you haven't eaten it can make the sickness worse- that's what I found anyway.

Easier said than done, but please try not to stress over work. You aren't feeling very well and you are eight weeks pregnant. You have also been signed off work.

I also found ice poles to be really helpful for something to suck on during the nausea. They really helped me.

Try and relax and rest, hope you feel better Flowers

Thank you ankleswingers. It is nice to know I'm not just being a wimp and others feel the same. I can now stop moaning about just feeling sick, just had my first throwing up. Don't feel better like I hoped I would. Forcing myself to have some water and a ginger biscuit. Thanks for your advice, really helpful

Don't let it upset you. I know it's easier said than done especially with all the hormones of pregnancy.
Take it easy
Don't be afraid to take time off work when you need to.
Accept help from friends and family.
It won't last forever and you will have a beautiful baby at the end of it all! Smile

Being only 8 weeks pregnant we have only told parents and my best friend, who hasnt been pregnant so cant offer advice in this regard. I have found just before Christmas is not an ideal time as you cant tell anyone and have to make up lots of excuses why you cant go out etc. So I'm sat at home feeling ill and sorry for myself! Luckily my husband is lovely so he has been a lot of help. Thanks again for all your comments. It seems like a great community here, glad to have joined.

Could you try and speak to your gp or pharmacist. Cyclizine seems to be the first line in antisickness medications and is available to but over the counter if the gp or pharmacist give the say so of course

I'm going to the pregnancy unit in my local hospital tomorrow. So hopefully will get some anti-sickness tablets.
