im pg with number 6,and last time i had really bad spd,to teh extent that i couldnt walk, and was put on pethadine!

so im absolutely terrified it happens again, especially as this time i have dd,who needs physio during the day,and i dont want to risk knackering my back!!

ive bought a support belt, just incase, but wondered if anyone has any advice on anything to do to prevent spd (if there is such a thing as to prevent it!!)

also, how soon should i wear the belt if my pelvis and back do start hurting?

Hi I suffered very very badly in my 3rd pregnancy I found weekly osteopath was a life saver it made a huge difference and very worthwhile the money. It was the difference between sleeping and not! Excrutiating agony and severe pain.

The following pregnancy I was not as bad although it started earlier because I knew what the symptoms were and did not do anything to aggrevate it. I would start wearing the belt asap.

thanks buffysmum!keep getting twinges and starting to worry about it starting again.will get my belt out and stick it on if it starts getting worse.just dont want to come to rely on it if you see what i mean!

sorry youve got it so bad.i had two support belts last time and they didnt do any good, couldnt cope on the crutches either,as my main prob was getting out of bed in a morning and coming down the stairs (which used to have me in tears)

am really hoping that i can spot the signs of it starting again and get myself sorted!!

thanks guys!!

Not sure if you can prevent SPD, but certain things can ease the discomfort.
I've found the following bits of advice invaluable (from fellow MNs)

-Wear satin nightie/pjs to bed, because you slid/turn over a lot easier (perfect excuse for a treat!)
-Sit on a plastic bag in the car so you can swing round easily.
-Get your mw/gp to refer you to physio as soon as any symptoms start.

I'm in my 2nd pregnancy, and was disgnosed with SPD at 27 weeks by my physio. She gave me a Fembrace (support belt) to wear , and have been wearing it everyday since I saw her at 27 weeks (I'm 32wks atm) I find that if I don't wear it, even for a few hours, I suffer the following day. I've been given crutches too, as my SPD is worse in the morning when I've been in one position for too long.

if its any consolation, my physio told me at my last appt that SPD can ease off towards the end of the pregnancy, as the babys head engages, the head takes up most of the slack, therefore the pelvis hasn't got so much freedom iyswim

Hi, Sorry to hear about your suffering. I had spd in last pg and in this one although not to the severe extent that i have heard about on mn. My midwife gave me sme very unusaul advice that i have not been able to bak up elsewhere but it seems to have been helpful for me so maybe worth a try, partic as a preventive measure....

She said that spd is made worse by all the hormones so keeping good hormone balance can help. the way she suggested to do this was: drink lots of water, absolutely no caffeine (inc chocolate unfortunately), then to make sure I had at least two portions of oily fish a week and also whilst symptomatic to take two tablespoons of olive oil a day (I used this in salad dressing) and when no longer having symptoms to reduce to one tablespoon. Must say my spd has been better for following advice and has not worsened during this pg (now 38 wks) so may be something in it. HTH
