Cold sore during pregnancy is absolutely fine, I get them all the bloody time.

Your body will ensure it protects the rest of itself from it being able to spread, basically any future sores will only be in that spot, once your body has built up immunity.

I've also been advised by a doctor it's rare to be able to accidentally give yourself genital herpes as again, the rest of your body will build immunity, not sure how much of that is true hence why I don't wipe my face with my towel & then use it on my body....just in case!

However if you get one once the baby is here, whatever you do, don't let him/her catch it! It could harm them

It's good that you've got the first one while pregnant as it will confer some immunity to the baby. The lady who lost her baby to a cold sore and was in the media and has set up a FB group to raise awareness, got her first one just around the time of the birth and her baby had no immunity, sadly. If you do get another outbreak when your baby is small (as happened to me), you can wear a surgical mask and gloves for nappy changes etc and avoid kisses to prevent it passing to your baby. They can be really dangerous for newborns, but not during pregnancy.

I'd be tempted to let your body fight it off by itself on this occasion so you build up some antibodies.

But for future outbreaks, Zovirax cream is good, but the absolutely wonderful coldsore machine that Boots make has changed my LIFE! Even the manufacturers don't claim to fully understand how it works, but it does. It's a little hand held gadget which pulses light onto the affected area for 3 minutes at a time. You use it a couple of times a day, and not only does it make the outbreak pass more quickly, but also reduces the frequency of outbreaks. I think it's about 30 quid and worth every penny.
