Fat and five weeks!

Hope you enjoy the catchy alliteration!
I'm five weeks pregnant - unplanned but overjoyed about this. I'm concerned about my weight. My first antenatal appointment is in two weeks. I am 5'8 and used to weigh nearly 15 stone, but have lost a stone through Slimming World and have now conceived. My BMI puts me at exactly 30 - this says I'm just about obese, though I am very 'healthy' in that I always walk at least 10k steps a day, have an active job, eat a varied diet and have a resting heart rate (pre pregnancy) of around 60. I wear size UK 14-16 clothes and although I do carry a lot of weight on my hips/thighs and have big boobs, I'm still worried it could affect my baby. I'm not overweight through lack of being 'healthy', I just enjoy eating too much of what I do eat!
Can anyone recommend me what's best to do about this, and whether my midwife will tell me I'm wrong or hurting my baby by being this size? I'm trying not to worry before my first appointment but I am!
Thanks x

I went into my first pregnancy with a bmi of 39, and am starting this one at 40. It's not great, but like you, I am active (work out 2x a week with a pt, cycle around 50 miles a week, swim a km every week, 10,000 steps a day etc) and my bp is exemplary. The mw weighed me at my booking in, and it wasn't mentioned again. I may have been lucky, some women seem to get more comments from their midwives/consultants, not sure if it was because I was older and made it clear that I wasn't ignorant of the risks. I was matter of fact about my excess weight, and don't take offence easily.

I did develop gestational diabetes later on, which I felt very guilty about, and controlled it with a low GI diet. As a bonus this meant I didn't put on too much extra weight overall after the first trimester carbfest. Oh I did see a dietician once to discuss my blood sugar readings. Having a higher BMI doesn't mean you will necessarily get GD though.

I was lucky, my daughter was fine. Being fat is obviously not ideal, but don't spend too much time dwelling on it, just try your best to eat as healthily as you can, I think you can actually do SW whilst pregnant.

It is tricky trying to find time to exercise, and resist cake, when you have a tiny baby and are sleep deprived, but it does get easier eventually! Good luck.

I'm a bit worried about this too. I lost weight before ttc but am still a bmi of exactly 26 putting me into the overweight category. I'm also 5 weeks so can't claim it's baby weight either! Should I be trying to lose weight? I'm 5 ft 7 and 11 st 10 lb.

You shouldn't attempt a strict, restrictive or exclusionary diet during pregnancy.

But it's not a bad time to look at your way of eating as a whole and see if you can make any improvements. Steadying your weight might be a welcome side effect of that.

I ballooned in 1st PG, and hadn't lost it by the second. HCPs aren't likely to see it as an issue at all unless your BMI at start of the pregnancy is over 30. And even then they'll look at your health as a whole.

And although some areas may have a weight limit on delivering in a MLU, there seems to be variation on whether that's a hard cut off or something that can be discussed.

The main thing is that there's oodles of time to work out what is best.

Congrats! And don't fret!

Carry on with slimming world. Add an extra HEA and an extra HEB I think, puts you at an average of 1,800 to 2,000 Cals a day. Enjoy your syns! . As long as your MW is supportive. Your consultant will give you a thing to get your MW to sign. I did carry on at first but stopped for financial reasons and I only started gaining when I stopped going. Plus the 2nd trimester makes you HUNGRY! I had a BMI of 32 with my first pregnancy and had a very healthy pregnancy and had a complication free water birth. This pregnancy is also going smoothly, I started with a BMI of 31 and didn't gain any weight overall until 22 weeks. You'll be fine xxx

P.s my first baby was born at 39+5 a healthy 7lbs 4 and is now 16 months old and tracking the 75th centile for height and weight (so sturdy but in proportion)
