Hi all,

I discovered on Monday that I am pregnant with my first child. I'm over the moon especially because I have polycystic ovaries but it's already causing me to panic.

  1. I don't really know what my due date is because my periods are so irregular
  2. I'm so scared that something will go wrong in the first 12 weeks
  3. I keep getting period like pains in my stomach and sometimes in my lower back. Is this normal??Does PCOS cause any complications?
  4. My biggest fear in life is childbirth!!

Any kind words and advice anyone can give me would be appreciated. I want to enjoy my pregnancy, not live in fear throughout.

Congratulations!

I have PCOS and two DC; the second arrived 6 days ago.

Due date can be confirmed by a dating scan. Your GP will arrange a booking appointment with midwives so you could request one.

Period like pains can be common in the v early days. Try not to worry unless the pain is accompanied by bleeding.

My DD is an IVF baby and the clinic advised me that there is some evidence to suggest that PCOS may increase the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester. However, I have no idea how conclusive/comprehensive/reliable that evidence is as I deliberately didn't look into it and took it just one day at a time. Try to do the same.

Congrats!!

Are you on any medication for your PCOS? I was on Metformin and the doc had me continue to take that until 8 or 12 weeks. (Think 8 weeks as I had a scan at 7+6 because it was IVF)

Book an appointment with your GP/midwife (in my area I had to go to the MW first) and lay down all these concerns.

If you fear childbirth then you should definitely go to some sort of antenatal classes. I've heard good reviews of hypnobirthing, although it's not something I did myself.

Like Blue I also took metformin throughout on the advice of my fertility clinic.

I haven't been on Metformin for a long time as I could just never get used to it - I don't think i need to go into too much detail over the awful digestive problems some can get with it Blush

I actually went down the more holistic route and found that reflexology worked a treat - it actually worked TOO well as I'm pregnant way before I was able to start tracking periods regularly.

I'm going to look into Hypnobirthing but, knowing what I'm like, I'll panic like I always do over pain and will be a complete failure :(
