Too Early To Tell Work??

SarahS2404 · 29/11/2016 15:23

Hi Everyone Smile

New to this as I found out I am pregnant yesterday.

I have figured out roughly I am 5w+2d.

When did everyone tell work? How early is too early?

I have a very close relationship with my colleagues and get on great with my boss also :)

Thanks in advance Grin

Congratulations!
I think it depends on your work a bit. I work in a chemical laboratory so told work asap so that I could start avoiding the dangerous chemicals.
If your job has no particular safety concerns, you could wait a little longer if you like, maybe until you start needing time off for midwife appointments etc?

LGmumtobe · 29/11/2016 15:29

If you have a great relationship with everyone around you at work, I don't think any date is too early.
By hiding it, you can build up unnecessary pressure on yourself for no real reason.
I personally waited until 12 weeks, for the 'just in case' reasons, but I wouldn't do this in future. I would share the news as soon as I had it confirmed. Just be prepared for the huge Q&A session :)

TinyTear · 29/11/2016 15:41

Depends on your history. As i have a history of recurrent miscarriage my boss was the first to know after my DH so he would understand if I was running to the toilet or needed to take time off at short notice for appointments and scans...

First time i was waiting for the 12 weeks and had to tell the boss after the EPU scan.

LetMeHaveABloodyName · 29/11/2016 15:43

I'm 5-6 weeks and told work yesterday. I have a Xmas do coming up & I can't be bothered pretending. But I have a great relationship with my boss/colleagues so if I did m/c & go off sick id want them to know why. Completely up to you!

Eminybob · 29/11/2016 15:43

I have also just found out I am pg but have had to have a scan and bloods due to bleeding so I had to tell my boss as I needed time off work.
I won't tell my other colleagues until after the 12 week scan probably. However, that said I don't know how I'm going to get away with not drinking af the various Christmas dos I have coming up.

SarahS2404 · 29/11/2016 15:46

I'm really eager to tell people (including family) but not sure how my partner feels about telling yet. My head has been in overdrive at work today!

I have no history as this will be baby no1. As far as I know, there isn't a history of miscarriage in my family.

I have no friends/family that are pregnant at the moment so have no one to buddy up with to share any info with :(

@ letmehaveabloodyname
I have my Christmas do on Friday also so don't want to pretend too

I was similar to eminy - I didn't want to tell work before the 12-week scan because of the possibility of miscarriage, but I had a bleeding scare at 6 weeks and needed time off work for an emergency scan, and am terrible at lying so came clean to my boss, who was lovely and kept it a secret with me until I could happily tell everyone after a good 12-week scan. Crikey, did those weeks drag though! Now at 29 weeks...

Foxley11 · 29/11/2016 15:54

I told my boss at 6 weeks, as I'm terrible at lying about why I'm ill (I took a day off sick as I had all my morning sickness in one day!) I get on really well with my boss though and she agreed not to make it formal until we had to. I think that lasted a month before I had to tell HR, then until 12 weeks when I just told everyone.
My work, especially my current department, is very friendly and accommodating. I'm aware I'm quite lucky!

SarahS2404 · 29/11/2016 15:54

SkyLucy I see what you mean, I think I'll speak to my partner and see what he thinks too.

Im excited to tell his dad too, as he is the only one of 3 children that will pass his dad's name on :) x

I couldn't keep my mouth shut, I told work at about 5 weeks, they would have guessed so quickly with the constant nausea that hit me pretty early on anyway! Smile

I reasoned that if I miscarried then I would have told them anyway so what difference did it make!

Congratulations by the way Smile

SarahS2404 · 29/11/2016 16:09

Thanks Elland!

Hoping that I don't have too much of a problem with sickness.

Yeah I guess so! I'm trying to keep that out of mind really but I see what you mean.

Congratulations to you all too, I haven't mentioned yet. Smile

First time didn't tell anyone until I had a MMC picked up by the EPU at 8 weeks and needed two weeks off, so told my manager.

Because she then realised I was actively ttc she sidelined me for the next nine months, which is when I found out I was pg again. Told her after twelve week scan.

This time I have a boss who also has young children so I told him last week, no intention of telling the rest of my team until at least 12 weeks, 20 if I can get away with it. It gets pretty boring, pretty quickly when it's all anyone can ever talk to you about.

I get on really well with all my colleagues, and I know they'll be thrilled, but I'm really loving having a big secret.

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 29/11/2016 18:57

I told work when the sickness hit at about 6 weeks - I was very poorly though and wanted the time off sick recorded as pregnancy related sickness. I also needed a risk assessment and some modified duties due to the nature of my job.

Mybugslife · 29/11/2016 19:07

Currently 31 weeks and with this pregnancy I told my work at about 6-7 weeks because I had a lot of appointments, early scans, blood tests etc so there was a couple of times I had to leave early and I hate lying!
I also told my family and a couple of close friends as soon as I found out. Going from
experience, having the support there if something does go wrong is a million times better than not!!

ConvincingLiar · 29/11/2016 19:43

35 weeks is a long time to know other people are pregnant. It might be nicer to save it up for later on. Entirely your call though.

SarahS2404 · 29/11/2016 21:17

We decided that Christmas will be a good time to tell our close family(his dad etc) Smile

I told my work at about 9 weeks. I had been really sick and had to have a few days off, so I felt I had to explain myself, and that it was possibly a bit obvious anyway. I wanted the protection of them knowing I was pregnant and not off for any other reason. If I had felt well I probably would've waited.

frikadela01 · 29/11/2016 21:26

I told my managers straight away because I work in a forensic mental health unit so had to stop carrying out certain duties alone. I Told my colleagues about 2 week later because it looked like I was shirking my share of the work.
This is such a personal decision though. I'm always surprised at the amount of threads that come up about it. Only you k ow whether you're comfortable people knowing.

Whatsername17 · 29/11/2016 21:27

Miscarriage is so horrendous that I'd say tell people who you will need to support you. We kept our second a secret and then I had a scan at 11 weeks (we wanted to give the scan photos as Christmas presents to announce). My baby had died. Having to tell people that there was a baby, but it has died was just so awful. I wish I'd told them at 4 weeks like I did with dd. Luckily I told work because I ended up needing a week off. My time off caused huge disruption to everyone else but because they knew why I was off they were so lovely and kind. It helped during a really horrendous time. I say enjoy every second of your pregnancy and make your announcements when ever you like. It won't affect the outcome- hopefully it will be a happy one!

SarahS2404 · 29/11/2016 21:57

Thankyou whatsername17. So sorry to hear about you miscarrying :( it must be such a hard thing to deal with!
