Miscarriage after 12 week scan

Just wondering what the stats are for a miscarriage after the 12 week scan when everything was looking 'normal'.

Also is there such a thing now, as the baby is bigger, of a missed miscarriage?

Thanks
xx

are you worried ? it is a lot less likley after the 12 week scan ,after the heartbeat has been seen..but it is not unheard of....

There is a link on the current pg after m/c thread which has some stats about m/c, but not exactly what you're looking for. All I know is that the chances of having a successful pg once a heartbeat has been detected are massively improved... Do you have a specific reason to be worried at the moment?

endlesslove · 15/02/2007 13:57

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes I am worried to a certain extent. Last night I had a stitch like pain that was burning going across tummy where belly button is, so not where baby is. It was very severe, couldn't stand up straight or move for about 15 minutes. Where pain was felt like it had cramped up, like went all hard. I was walking around bent over to try to relieve it. It went away.

Today I have had small niggly pains lower down, only every now and again. Probably about every couple of hours so hardly at all. I am not sure whether this is my imagination but tummy doesn't appear to be as tight as yesterday.

Does this sound like trapped wind or constipation? Just was thinking the worst and really don't want to.

Could be. I had severe indigestion last time I was pg and thought I had a stomach ulcer. The pain was mainly around my tummy button. The doctor prescribed some nasty gaviscon tablets which helped a bit. The other thing is that there seem to be lots of tummy bugs going around at the moment, so it could be one of those...

If it was a problem with baby then surely it would be lower down, where the baby is, am I right?

Also, from what I understand at 13+5 weeks niggly pains are common as everything is stretching- am I right there?

Thanks

Endlesslove,
From the babyloss website
"Four-fifths of miscarriages occur in the first 12 weeks (first trimester) of pregnancy. Pregnancy loss later than this is much less common"

Not exactly what you want, but may help ease your mind. If you are worried, why not call up midwife or GP and see if you can been seen.

How many weeks are you?

Mumpbump · 15/02/2007 14:11

I would have thought so. And I am sure you would get all kinds of niggly little pains as things stretch - can't remember enough of my pg with ds to say whether I did or not. I suppose the other thing they might be is braxton hicks contractions - don't know when they're meant to start as I never experienced them when pg with ds.

USAUKMum · 15/02/2007 14:12

You can get quite bad pains from stretching, for me they were worse the first pg (as you would expect ). Trying to recall exactly how they felt. I remember being around the hip bones, and just under ribcage ...also quite sharp at times. That help you?

cupcake78 · 15/02/2007 14:17

I know it is very unlikely to happen once you have passed the 12 weeks and if you have had a clear scan then I would try to relax if you can.

The pains could be anything from stretching to constipation/wind. If it doesn't get better I think I would speak to someone just for your own reasurrance.

ShowOfHandsWithFalseBeard · 15/02/2007 14:17

"Almost 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, with the majority occurring during the first 12 weeks.

There is a 75% chance of miscarriage in weeks 1-2 of pregnancy, when you do not know you are pregnant.

There is a 10% chance of miscarriage in weeks 3-6 and this number drops to 5% during weeks 6-12.

During the second trimester the chance of miscarriage drops again to 3%. After you?ve reached 20 weeks gestation, it is no longer considered a miscarriage."

I am 27wks pg and there is not a day goes by when I don't have some niggle/stretch/sensation/cramp.

I know from seeing you on other threads that you are pregnant with a much longed for baby and like me you are worrying all the time. All I can say is that atm you are pg, the baby is healthy and there is very little chance of anything going wrong. Take it from somebody who is constantly worried that something's wrong, you're probably fine!

time4tea · 15/02/2007 14:48

Lesley Regan puts the chances of having a healthy baby at 97% once you see a heartbeat on a scan. (Your pregnancy week by week) That book also said lots of the stomach pains around this 3 month + period are down to muscle stretching.

good luck

Thanks everyone, very much at ease now. Going to enjoy being pregnant now I promise!

You are all very supportive. xx
