'Slight' placenta praevia at 20 weeks...

So I've just had my anomaly scan and everything is great with baby, sonographer was great. However, she did mention that I have a thin portion of placenta 'lying low' and has asked me to come back at 32 weeks. There was a doctor at the scan (learning to scan) and she and the sonographer both advised that they were probably being over-cautious and that the placenta was only a tiny bit 'in the way', and that it would probably resolve by the time of the birth.

I sort of understand what's happening and what may ultimately happen, but I'd love to know if anyone had the same experience at 20 weeks then went on to have a normal vaginal delivery?

Hi when I had my 20week scan, the sonographer told me the guidelines had changed and now all ladies that show the placenta within 2cm of the cervix opening will be scanned at 32weeks.

Mine is within that but I'm already booked in for later scans due to small babies.
She did say that most move as the pregnancy progresses so not to worry. If it's only a little over then I would say you should be fine but obviously you won't know for definite until the later scan

I had this at my 20 week scan, and was advised to book another scan later on (which I've already got booked anyway for other reasons) My sonographer explained that as the baby grows the placenta is likely to move up and out of the way anyway but they just need to check. My placenta is posterior if that helps (if that's the when where it's towards my back!) I wouldn't worry, it's likely the placenta will move up out the way if it wasn't completely covering the cervix

director this is why I asked- yes most placentas move up in time but it is worth noting that posterior placentas tend to be a little more stubborn!! I have a posterior low lying placenta I'm 32weeks and I've had 9bleeds because of it- baby is fine but she will have to come out via csection! Possibly an emergency one if this damn bleeding won't stop!

According to the report, the placenta is 'left lateral/posterior', so left side of the back?

They did explain that things would probably move into correct position over second half of pregnancy.

With DS2 my placenta was completely covering the cervix - and even then it had moved sufficiently out of the way by 34 weeks. Needed a cs in the end anyway but for unrelated reasons.

Yes, I had exactly the same as you. It's fairly common apparently. In most cases the placenta will move and you'll have a 'normal' delivery.

It's great getting the extra scan at 32 weeks. Some countries (and some hospitals in the UK) offer the extra scan as a matter of course. An additional reassurance that your baby is developing as expected

My placenta was low at the 20 weeks scan, I went back 2 weeks later for them to see the heart and lips as my naughty little man wouldn't show them at the original scan and the placenta had moved 😊 Its quite likely it will move before the 32 weeks scan 😊 I wouldn't worry just enjoy getting a bonus glimpse of your new little person xx

I had my belly jiggled around as my little one was lying face down initially! Eventually moved around into the right position though. Really encouraging to hear these replies, thanks.

Eternal ahh sorry to hear that :-( Kind of wish a little bit that the placenta was anterior and cushioning me against the real kickboxer legs my LO seems to have at the moment, oof!

Yes me! Had two scans to check and on second scan (32 weeks ) all was clear. I delivered baby and placenta without complication.

Been for my 20 week scan and they've said the placenta is low - posterior low. What are the chances this will move up before? Got another scan at 32 weeks.

The vast majority move as the uterus grows. Mine was low (anterior) at 20 weeks with my first and had moved by the next scan.

Oh ok so it doesn't make a difference where is it.. Front it back... It should still move up.

I've just had my 32 week scan and mines moved. It's now at the top of my womb in fact! Mine is anterior too.
