Nuchal fold scan shows 1:11 risk - any one else had similar?

I've just had a nuchal fold scan (3.3mm) and the risk of Downs is 1 in 11.
Did anyone else have similar stats, then go on to have healthy baby?
I'm definitely going to do amnio test or CVS - any views or preferences on either of these tests?
Thanks

Hi Zelda - I don't have experience of this, just wanted to say I'm sorry you're having some worrying weeks ahead. The difference between CVS and amnio is of time (CVS can be done sooner) and risk (slightly higher in CVS, i think it's 1% vs 0.5%). Good luck and meanwhile, don't forget that the nuchal scan is only a screening test, not diagnostic.

The miscarriage risk between CVS and amnio is basically the same - 1%. The difference between the two is that b/c CVS is done earlier in pregnancy, i.e. during the first trimester, the risk of miscarriage during this time is anyway higher than in the second or third trimesters. It's not that one procedure is riskier than the other. If you have already had the nuchal scan and gotten results like you have and you want to do further testing, then in my opinion there's no reason to wait to do the amnio. The amnio is generally done if you didn't have the nuchal scan and the first scan you have done that shows a potential problem is at about 20 weeks. There's no point in waiting to do the amnio. I'd just do the CVS now and then you will have a definitive answer. I'm not sure where you are located, but if you are anywhere near London then I can highly recommend the Fetal Medicine Centre. They are absolutely fantastic. They will be able to talk everything over with you and give you clear advice as to your options. I just went there for a scan this week actually and I couldn't be more pleased with my experience there. I hope this helps. Good luck with everything!

Hi

My sister had a 1:30 chance after her Barts test and Nuchal fold scan. She continued with her pregnancy, didn't have a CVS or Amnio as she felt even if it had come back positive she couldn't have gone through with a termination (she had felt the baby move etc). She had an elective c-section and my nephew came out as a healthy happy little boy, but he did have Downs Syndrome.

Good luck with the next few weeks. Hope this hasn't panicked you.... it is a statistic after all.

Hi
I had a worrying pregnancy, nuchal fold measured 4.5 also had cystic hygromas, fluid aroud brain and spine and other markers. Had a cvs 2 days later as they were sure it was Turners syndrome or Downs syndrome. Results came back negative, also had a heart csan which was normal. Finally at 30 week scan all the fluid had gone and things were normal.
Had a healthy baby girl in Dec weighing 8.5 lbs and she has a very thick neck, extra folds of skin at back of neck.
I went to Queen Charlottes and wasnt very impressed. No sympathy or advice, very matter of fact when I was in pieces. The Fetal Medicine centre was very good when I went for routine scans with my first.
The cvs didnt hurt, and you get the main results back within a few days which is good as you will be thinking of nothing else.
Good luck and I hope things turn out well.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Just to let you know that I had a CSV test and it came back as NEGATIVE for Downs. So a big relief, I guess 1:11 still means the odds are in your favour!
Good luck to anyone who is going through the same thing. The CSV procedure was fine and not painful - I found it less painful than taking a blood sample.

HI Zelda, very happy to hear your good news!! It's so nice to be able to relax and enjoy your pregnancy xx

WaynettaSlob · 09/03/2007 13:26

Glad you got the result you wanted Zelda, and here's to a healthy 2nd and 3rd trimester.

bambi06 · 09/03/2007 13:28

what are good risks .ie the 1 in whatever number..how can you tell if yours is a good risk compared to a younger mother?

mum2george · 09/03/2007 14:14

Hi Zelda

Congrats on your good news! Was just wondering how long you had to wait from the nuchal scan to the CVS?

Its just that a girl at works has come back as 1:12 and she has been told that she can go to Birmingham for CVS (1 hours drive if you are lucky) and its 1:50 risk of mc. & if she wants amino she has to wait 4 weeks!

Seems a bit excessive to me.

MrsMar · 09/03/2007 14:21

Hi bambi, I had my nuchal yesterday, I'm 36 and my baseline risk (ie for all women aged 36) is 1:100, after my scan that risk was adjusted to 1:1000, which is low risk. I don't know at what point the figures change from normal risk to low risk iyswim, but i hope that helps.

MrsMar · 09/03/2007 14:24

bambi, I've just googled nuchal translucency, and this web page has a list of the risk levels for each age...

crikey, maybe it's the hormones turning me into a techno loon!!

MrsMar · 09/03/2007 14:28

Gah!!! just looked at the results of my scan yesterday, my baseline risk was 1:186 not 1:100!! Doh!

Stoopid hormones!

WaynettaSlob · 09/03/2007 14:33

here you go MrsMar

nh101 · 09/03/2007 14:59

Zelda200, so pleased to hear that your test came back negative.

The odds were always in your favour cos for every 11 women who get a 1:11 risk of Down's, only one will go on to have a baby with Down's. It just sounds like a certainty compared to 1:1000!

bambi06 · 09/03/2007 16:52

so mine came back as 1 in 1485 and i`m 40 but thats the same risk as a 20 yr old according to that link..is that right?..thanks for the link BTW.

nh101 · 09/03/2007 16:55

Not sure about your question but I think 1 in 1400 is pretty good odds! Congrats.

mum2george · 09/03/2007 21:19

Just taken a look at the link, mine came back as 1:2135. Suddenly feel about 15 instead of 38!

bambi06 · 11/03/2007 11:32

where did you get that figure mumtogeorge ? as i dont see it go up tha thigh, i must be missing something
