Food reaches baby

Hi there, bit of a scientific question, but does anyone know how long it takes for the food a mum eats to reach the baby in the womb? So if I have an apple at 1PM how long before it reaches the baby in the womb? Feels like a silly technical question

Have not got a clue but if i eat something sweet like chocolate (naughty but needed) it does not seem to take long and baby has hicups, which i thought they got when drinking fluid because of a taste they like. But i could be completely wrong!

my girls used to kick like mad within moments of ice cream/chocolate

I dont know the time scale but it is the same lenght of time as it takes for nutrients to get into your blood stream.

The food doesn't get directly to them. It gets digested by you, and bits of the food go into your bloodstream (mostly the sugars, I think?) and across the placenta to the baby.

The taste does get into the amniotic fluid, but I'm not sure how much, or how quickly. Helarno, your child may be moving around more after you have chocolate in it, because they're buzzy from the sugar or caffeine?

Can I add a question please, my firends MW said to her (34week) to drink cold cold water if she cant feel the babys movments that offen as babies dont like cold water and (give it 15 mins or so) tend to move about alot there after, whats that all about?

MrsBadger · 14/02/2007 17:18

probably just don't like the feeling of being next to a stomach full of cold water...

NotQuiteCockney · 14/02/2007 17:19

Yeah, cold water might have an effect that way.

Or it might be a way to get the mum to sit still and pay attention to the movements?
