Drinking first five weeks

Hi

I've just found out I'm five weeks pregnant. This was unexpected and unplanned and I am worried as i have been very drunk on a number of occasions during this time.

Does anyone know the implications of drinking during the first five weeks?

I didn't know for my first two kids that I was pregnant until 8 weeks and got drunk on a number of occasions. Both kids have had no issues as a result and I was told not to worry.

I drank because it was my birthday and I found out a few days later I was pregnant. My baby has sever heart defects. I do not know what has caused them but I try not to blame myself

A friend of mine, drank, smoked and smoked weed whilst pregnant....her daughter has a heart problem. However it's hereditary, they babies dad has one.
Even so, if your child did have something wrong, don't blame yourself because of a few drunken nights! No one can tell what actually caused the issue and the likelihood of it being the drink is slim!

I don't think the placenta is supplying oxygen and nutrients until later. Worth researching yourself, but I wouldn't worry. Congratulations!

kmini is correct - at under 5 weeks it wouldn't actually make any difference as just a cell that is implanting itself and dividing, it isn't being fed by your bloodstream.

I drank a lot during the two weeks before my missed period and my daughter has a hole in her heart. I don't know whether it's related but I will always think that I caused it.

As mentioned by pp, before the pregnancy is sustained by the placenta your alcohol consumption won't be relevant. It's only once the alcohol can cross the placenta that it can harm the foetus.

I was also told that until the placenta has formed and the baby shares your blood supply to not worry, usually around the eight week mark

I found out I was pregnant at 10 weeks , I'd got married 3 weeks before. Drank at the wedding and eaten / drank whatever I fancied on honeymoon. I'd also been on antibiotics. I was terrified I'd damaged my baby. He's now a strapping 25 year old and has always been in good health thankfully

Oysterbabe you really shouldn't blame yourself. It is entirely unwarranted medically. Hope your dd is doing OK.

This is what I was lead to believe too.

I don't think there's a definite answer tbh. I can tell you that I drank a bottle of vodka (not in one go!) The week before I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant DD is fine.

Also know a lady who didn't know she was pregnant and went on a girls holiday, got passed every night and also had a tattoo. Her DD was also fine.

I'm not saying it's a good idea but try not to worry.

Loads of women will drink when they're first pregnant, simply because, like you, they don't know they're pregnant. Try not to worry about it. All you can change is from now.

I drank in the first 6 weeks with no ill effects.
