Fundal Height = Baby Size????

hi

I went to see the mw earlier - it was a reasurrance visit due to ny history, anyway my fundal height is 25 which is how many wks I am but she said baby was on small side - left me a bit confused and a little worried really, I know it is highly unlikely I will have a giant baby - my mum, me and dd have all been around 5lb (altho dd was early)

Anyone have any experince of this why would she say small if fundal height was equal to wks

I'm not sure why she would say that - can you give her a call and say you've been thinking about it and are confused so please could she explain it to you? I'm sure it's nothing to worry about though.

lulumama · 13/02/2007 19:21

i really wouldn;t worry! palpation is quite inaccurate! fundal height should equal the number of weeks you are, but some women measure a bit bigger or a bit smaller, but it is the overall pattern of growth, that is personal to you , that is imporant, ie suddenly measuring much bigger or smaller.....

if you have had a small baby and your family produce small babies, then i would not be concerned! x

funnypeculiar · 13/02/2007 19:24

Grrr, I hate it when mws drop these off the cuff comments that you then have to go home & stress about!! As I understand it, as lulu says, any measurements from outside the body are pretty inaccurate (& for that matter even growth scans are pretty pants at gauging wieght. So I'm SURE there's nothing to worry about at all (I measured small for dates throughout my pregnancy with dd... she was 6lb15 - ie normal... my best mate was induced becaused they were concerned about her baby's growth ... he was 7lbs!)

BUT if you need more reassurance, give her a call - its a fair question, ime...

divastropwantstodrop · 13/02/2007 21:03

i measured big for dates all through the last trimester with dd2,was told she would be a big baby etc.she was 6lb 13!

LupinsBigLump · 13/02/2007 21:09

Thanks all - I am having a reasurrance scan next week for a differant matter, l/o is certainly kicking strong enough and the hb was good - good to hear other peoples experiences

I always measured 3-4 over my weeks. At 40 wks and in early labour I measured 44.Midwife said "oh a definate 9-10lber here"
Which frightened the life out of me.
He was 7lb 10oz and I had loads of water.Try not to worry I think as you said you have history of not big babies in the family then I'm sure you are just going to be the same. But if you're really concerned then maybe give her a ring and let her know how you are feeling.

ProfYaffle · 14/02/2007 10:10

With dd1 I was measuring big, even had a late scan which predicted she would be over 10lbs. She was 8lbs 4oz in the end. I'm now nearly 38 weeks with dd2 and been told I'm 2cm bigger than I should be but am a bit about it. This baby feels smaller than dd1 to me.

Hope you get a straight answer from the mw.
How is the fundal height measured anyway?

conkertree · 14/02/2007 15:27

i may be wrong, but have read somewhere that its measured from the top of the pubic bone to the highest point.

when does it get measured?

ProfYaffle · 14/02/2007 15:41

Yup, that's it. They measure your tummy with a common or garden tape measure. I've got a fat tum anyway, even when not pg, which is why I'm about it having much to do with the size of my baby. I got measured from early on, can't remember how many weeks though.

lulumama · 14/02/2007 15:43

regardless of the size of your pre pregnant tum, fundal height is fairly easy to assess, the more pregnant you are, as the bit they are measuring, the top of the uterus, is a muscular ridge, that is quite easy to feel, measured from the pubic bone i think , yes with a tape measure!

helarno · 14/02/2007 16:20

I would not worry i am 36weeks and measure 34cm and was told not a big baby, but scan said it was about 6.7IB ish already so i would not worry. Think they measure from pubic bone to top of uterus which you might beable to feel when you lay down, i can feel top of mine but i could be completely wrong.

becca2007 · 14/02/2007 17:12

Going by my measurements my baby appeared to have shrunk by over 4cm in last two weeks!

Today at 38+4, first MW measured 31cm but then senior one got at least 36cm. It seems some part of baby is up by my ribs, above where they felt top of fundus was... Confused

She reckoned on at least 6lb anyway...

Divvy · 14/02/2007 17:58

Can I just drop something in here please?Thankies

2 weeks ago at 38weeks, a midwife thought my baby had turned breech, was sent for scan, and baby was head down.

Yesterday I saw another midwife, and she coments....."oh I can see why the other midwife thought you were breech"

I asked her to explain, but all I could get out of her was, the baby has a boney bum, but then went on to coment on were my other babies big!

So now at 39 weeks...I am now worried that baby is big, with a boney bum!!

What is this boney bum thing about? Anyone?

How can it have a boney bum, but be big as well?

I am filled with dread...and I hope I go before I have to see her again next week!

ps my fundal height is equal to dates, and other midwife says its average sized.....

lulumama · 14/02/2007 18:02

fundal height should, but not always, should equal the number of weeks you are, until the last 4 weeks or so, when you drop a bit,

i would not get too concerned re the measurements or a weight estimated through palpation as can be quite inaccurate

your baby will be the right size for him and you !

might be a long rather than weighty baby, try not to be too concerned xxx

LupinsBigLump · 15/02/2007 15:30

Hi

Just an update - went for a scan today - they said it was too early for growth scan but took some measurements and then mw looked at them again and said everything is as it should be - no need to be concerned, also good amount of fuid which was another worry - also its a boy!!!
