Echogenic bowel found on scan

I'm 28w with baby no 2, at 20w scan a white spot showed up on baby's bowel (I believe the medical term is echogenic bowel). They thought it might just be a calcium spot but booked a scan for today just in case. I went back today to see if it's still there and it is

They have no idea what it is or the severity, I'm going next week to a specialist fetal medicine unit a few hours away.

The first thing they look for is potential genetic/chromosomal issues such as Down's Syndrome but my screening for that came back 1 in 49,750 so whilst they can't completely rule it out it's highly unlikely.

Baby is otherwise perfect and growing well, almost in the 'too big' range.

So just wanted to ask if anyone had similar on their ultrasound and what the outcome was? I'm so worried!

I have no experience of this but on reading this (www.ouh.nhs.uk/patient-guide/leaflets/files%5C10681Pechogenicbowel.pdf) from the NHS it looks like the chance of Cystic Fibrosis is slim & there could be another much less serious reason for it.

Thanks Mrs, that is my biggest worry but at least we'd know! I just hate the wait and uncertainty

Oh I know, try not to worry (easier said than done) and think positively.

Is it just me or does it seem like that's all pregnancy is...waiting for something or other?

I'm a neonatal nurse and echogenic bowel Picked up on scans is actually quite common. It could be completely nothing. They may want to check that your baby passes meconiun properly once delivered and keep an eye. Other causes can indeed be CF,Hirschsprungs or a blockage in the bowel. Try not to worry too much,you won't know more until your baby is born and chances are it will be all be absolutely fine
