So shocked to read this news, but not surprising to know. How do you feel?

fuzzy I don't think that's the minority... me and some friends had this conversation recently and every one of us said we would happily pay more tax if it went directly to nhs.

The whole NHS just need reorganization and need more efficiency. It can improve much better even without inputting more money. If the system is not going to change, it will be getting better even you input more money. Inputting more money is just like to pour water into a bucket with a hole!

I don't agree the view that if you are not satisfied with the NHS service just go to private. I rather go for another way that we pay extra money directly to NHS to get value added service, i.e. Shortened waiting time, asking more tests which currently doctors are reluctant to give to you now but you think it is essential, choosing the doctor more capable, etc. but the cost is lower than go for private.

You pay the more tax to fund NHS you don't know where they spend money. I rather pay the value added cost to NHS to get the service I want. There are 2 benefits: 1. Release the financial burdens borne by NHS a bit 2. Get the service you want.

The current situation is we only have 2 options, 1. Crappy service in NHS but free 2. Go for private but too expensive. We should have one more option in the public hospitals: cost required service and free of charge service in NHS, at least we have option to get better service by paying fair amount of extra money. Many other countries are doing the same why we should not have.

Fuzzy virtually everyone I know says they would pay more tax if it went directly into the NHS, but the Government don't give us that choice. They are too concerned about that being a vote loser and getting re elected is more important to them.

I'm not surprised. Maternity is hugely underfunded and understaffed. It's just not a priority to the NHS chiefs as it actually a loss-leader.

For those willing to pay more in taxes, you could use that money for private healthcare and then if anything bad happened it would free up the NHS for someone else. I have private healthcare and recently had cancer and my treatment cost hundreds of thousands, but was all covered by my insurance, therefore not draining the NHS. Plus I was much more in control of my options, consultant choices etc. This obviously doesn't help with maternity as it's not covered unless a section is medically necessary. The problem is that we all say how wonderful the NHS is, people don't get insurance even if they can afford it, but then find out all of the shortcomings when they have to use it.

Although it wouldn't be the fairest system to encourage those who could afford private healthcare to do so as they are the ones paying most in taxes and keeping the NHS alive in the first place!

Bellabelloo I much rather see a properly funded and well stafffed NHS for everyone. We can afford it, but it's all about priorities isn't it?
As a Country we spend less per head of the population on healthcare than a lot of other Countries (including many European ones). Hmm

Totally agree Missy!
