Prebooked scan at 34 weeks IVF related?

Hi i'm currently 23 +5 and have been given a scan at what will be 34-35 weeks and a consultant appointment, does anyone have any idea what this is for? I am guessing not a routine scan but i wonder why i've been given it, i'm assuming it's either because i'm 39 or because i'm an IVF pregnancy but wondered if anyone else had experience of this?

I'm not in the U.K. so not sure, but am 37 and expecting my 2nd IVF baby. In "older" mothers there is a chance that the placenta starts to deteriorate towards the end of the pregnancy. That happened with my first and so this time round they recommended another US after the 20 week screening. Maybe it is age related?

I wouldn't see it as a cause for concern though if they haven't raised any issues before - rather another chance to see the little one!

It's probably your age. I am IVF too and 41 and have had a couple of consultant apps and 2 extra scans (29 and 32 weeks), this was age related not to do with how baby was conceived. Nothing to worry about, it's just to cover any possible issues of being an older mum, which in most cases is none! I thought the starting point was 40.

It's actually nice to have another chance to see baby on the screen

Thanks for your replies. I asked my MW she said she didn't know and assumed it was because of IVF (she's not the most helpful!)

You are right it will be nice to see him, i need to focus on the positives of the extra scan and stop worrying about why i need it!

Where I'm booked (big London teaching hospital), it's routine to have a scan at 36weeks. It was nice - they made sure baby was head down, no cord round neck and that placenta/fluid was all good. V reassuring! No idea about the consultant appointment though, sorry.

Some areas see ivf pregnancies as high risk, so it may be that.

I'm currently pg following IVF and was told that an IVF pregnancy in itself isn't enough to warrant being consultant led. However, I've seen on other threads that some ladies who've had IVF haven't been allowed to go past their due dates as apparently the placenta can start to break down. Not the policy in my area though afaik.

Consultant led gets a 34 wk appointment and scan as standard here.

Yes Chloe EDD is Dec 28th!
