I would love a baby basket, I find that when I've had my babies that everyone has brought things for the baby and not me , this time round as D-MIL is buying all the baby skin care item, It would be lovely for DH to buy me a basket, I would love to have in it, Thornton's choc, one glass size Champagne (the mini one's you can buy now), lovely bubble bath, bath wash's, salts, oh yes and bath bombs from "lush", and body creams from "lush", little bear saying "new mum", a card that comes with a promise of a night/day out with meal just DH and I (before child plans to move out), and to top it off flowers, I wouldn't want much but that would be so fab (hope your reading this DH you have 25weeks to get it sorted don't forget who's buying your playstation 3)
But yes they would be top things on my list!

If you do get babygrows - get some "new born" ones - all the ones I was given as presents were 0-3 months and completely swamped her. I phoned my sister in tears (it seemed like a tragedy at the time) and she came round with the most gorgeous teeny-weeny pink one that fitted perfectly (for about a week) but was soooo special just for that reason.

i got hold of a local photographer who takes pictures daily, and gave my friend a framed picture of the dawn of the day her baby was born. she loved it wasnt too expensive either, around £20

i would add some lavender oil (for mum), really helps to soothe any stiches when poured in a bath and can be relaxing too.

She has loads & loads of tiny baby, new born & 0-3 months baby vests her MIL keep buying them & i have given her loads from my dd, so i have brought some 3-6 months ones.

Mumsnet's list (2006) of best gifts for a Newborn included a GAP swaddle blanket. My sis bought us one for our second - I became a swaddling convert on our son's first long sleep. It was so utterly brilliant I went out and bought a spare. It's made of layers of supersoft stretchy jersey and works to hold a newborn's flailing little limbs in place.

Scooby, just a thought but if you don't already have a basket, a really pretty covered box would be great as it can then be used as a keepsake box for the baby's hospital tags, first teddy etc.

Ceolas · 09/02/2007 21:23

Haven't read it but heard this book quite good and lighthearted on breastfeeding.

pollydoodle · 09/02/2007 22:00

Also how about a syringe from the pharmacist for giving medicine - if she already has a dc then she'll probably have calpol/etc in, but nothing worse than trying to give a dose of medicine to a baby before a vaccination and not being able to get it in!

And, if you haven't already got a basket, how about some sort of caddy that could be used to hold a nappy changing kit downstairs so she doesn't have to always run upstairs to change dd - if she is feeling sore after giving birth being able to change the baby upstairs or downstairs is a nice option!

LowFatMilkshake · 09/02/2007 22:07

We got a similar basket from friends when DS was born, it was lovely as we already had a DD there was something for everyone.

DS got a blanket, bibs, baby grows, hat, teddy
DD got puzzles and jelly sweets
Me and DH got bottle of Asti and Belgian chocs

Another thought: Lansinoh bf cream. I couldn't bf my first and this got me through sore nips to bf my second.

bramblina · 09/02/2007 22:28

Lovely hand cream
Pate
Lansinoh nipple cream
Newborn nappies
Shawl for the baby if you can find anyone to make one. This is the most useful and beautiful thing ds recieved, he couldn't live without it.
No.1 cd single, my best friend loved her ds's.
Swimming costume (the first size is just so adorable)
Lavender essential oil
New slippers and/or comfy pjs

Lullabyloo · 10/02/2007 10:28

weleda nappy cream is lovely for new bots

bar of lovely chocolate(for the iron of course)
tiny socks
scratch mits
lavender oil/burner
nice baby mag
bath stuff for Mum & babe
mini bottle of champers
musical toy

I did one recently - geared at the baby though, with some non-alcoholic punch thrown in! In addition to some of the things mentioned already -

Baby Mozart dvd - dd now 3 and still watches it every so often - it was fab when she was a baby.

Nursery rhymes tape - I'd forgotten the words to most of them and it was great to be reminded so I could sing to her.

Antibacterial gel hand cleaner - that is so handy and stops you having to wash your hands every time which dries them out.

Lots of the first books dd enjoyed eg Dear Zoo, black and white Baby Shapes books etc; cloth book, bath book, buggy book.

And a lovely huge piece of fleece - just off a roll at local material shop - doesn't fray and can be cut into smaller blankets if wanted.
