Having a show and going into labour

I'm sure this is one of these 'how long is a piece of string' type questions but maybe someone can help. I am 39 wks pg today, I had DS1 at 39wks + 1 day, I probably shouldn't be thinking this way but cannot help but feel that this pregnancy shouldn't last longer than the first.

I have been feeling like I am going into labour since Thursday, very strong Braxton Hicks, midwife who examined me on Thursday (regular check-up) was having great difficulty feeling the baby because my stomach was like a brick most of the time. On Sunday evening I had had enough of the contractions and as they seemed to be becoming more regular and were accompanied by period type pains in my lower stomach, upper thighs and lower back I decided to go into the hospital to see if anything was happening. The midwife put me on the monitor and I did appear to be having regular strongish contractions, although was not in enough distress to be in full blown labour, she decided to do an internal examination to see if I was dilating. It turns out I was between 1 and 2cms, although this apparently can be the case with a subsequent pregnancy was she said the cervix doesn't always close properly after the first baby, the cervix wasn't soft but was medium although still quite posterior (hope this is the correct terminology, I think this is how she described the situation) and the baby's head still high (3/5ths but DS1 was the same and didn't fully engage until labour).

I came home quite disappointed as although I didn't expect to be in full blown labour I was convinced something was happening. On Monday however I had a show and stupidly got all excited again, I am still here on Wednesday and wondered if anyone knew whether there was a normal time period between having a show and going into labour?

Probably a daft question but if anyone can help then thanks in advance!

Ooooo, how exciting - good luck Demented

Marina · 31/05/2002 12:44

Good luck Demented! I am sure that ScummyMummy will agree that if it's a girl you'll have to call her Elizabeth, Queenie for short! Thinking of you.

debster · 31/05/2002 13:44

Thanks Mears for the explanation.

Demented - I'm so excited for you. It's really weird being at work and reading a post from someone who may be in the throes of labour. Puts everything into perspective. I hope everything goes well for you and make sure you've got some wine on hand

GOOD LUCK!

Thank you for all your kind words of support and encouragement. Finally went into the hospital at 8pm on Friday night to be told I was still only 2cms dilated although having painful contractions. By about 10pm (they kept me in and sent DH home) they were every three mins but not strong enough. Took their offer of a bed, two strong painkillers and a Temazapan, just wanted to sleep. Basically I couldn't sleep and things just took off like a tornado! Midwife on duty did not believe me and basically said get to bed and when I said no said that I could shuffle up and down the corridor as much as I wanted, wouldn't change anything. Thankfully I bumped into a more understanding midwife who persuaded the first midwife to examine me, even if it was just to humour me. When examined I was 6cms dilated and the waters were about to go with the baby's head right behind them. She rang my DH who made his way in, they transferred me to the delivery ward. I have never felt anything like it in my life, DH just arrived in time to see DS no 2 born, waters went in a kind of explosion with baby following, I had to be told I had delivered the head!!! Once baby delivered the plancenta just delivered itself straight after (no injection).

Sorry still on a high and haven't slept since Friday morning, hope this makes sense.

PS DS2 9lb 1/2oz!

Demented · 03/06/2002 22:22

Thanks for all your kind words, looks like DS2 is already having an identity crisis, he is a bouncing baby boy !

Salalex, believe it or not I also completed my Tesco Direct Internet Grocery shopping whilst in labour too! DH hadn't seen the point in going to ASDA the night before hence we had no food at all in the house!

Anyway need to go now and see to the wee one the in-laws have been coming round all day and none of them seemed to get the hint it was time to go, much yawning from me in the corner didn't seem to help either!

sorry about that hope ds is fine

Joe1 · 04/06/2002 08:30

Demented Im sorry, are you sure he is not a girl
Hope you get some peace soon.

Demented · 04/06/2002 09:37

Yes he's definately a boy although I was a bit confused myself at first as I am sure the midwife said 'what a lovely big girl', I was a bit shocked as although I would have loved a DD we were told at the scan he was a DS and I must have had too much gas and air or something as he is definately a DS. I am now the proud mum of two lovely wee boys!

Oh, getting all emotional now, milk coming in!
